Wired lists cars that should head to the scrapheap

The auto industry is reeling from the economic downturn with GM announcing the end of the Saturn line along with most of Pontiac. But according to Wired magazine, there are a number of other cars that should die as well.

Although Chrysler has said it will soon be rid of the PT Crusier, Wired says it shouldn’t stop there and suggests offing the Dodge Nitro which it says looks rugged and tough, but has a “puny” engine under the hood.

Another vehicle ready for the scrapheap is the Chevy Avalanche whose demise – it says – should be obvious to Chevrolet based on horrible sales figures.

“Even three years before $4 a gallon gas, sales of the Avalanche began falling faster than, well, an avalanche,” writes Wired. “From a 2002 high of nearly 90,000 trucks sold, a mere 35,003 Avalanches made it off the lot in 2008.”

However there are some good used cars drivers should look to when making a purchase. According to Consumer Reports, Honda and Toyota dominated their list of the most reliable used cars with the Honda Civic and Toyota Echo leading the list of best small cars.

Singer’s $1.4 million Ferrari Enzo damaged

Jay Kay, lead singer of the band Jamiroquai, must have gone into Virtual Insanity this weekend when his $1.4 million Ferrari Enzo was damaged while staying at a seaside resort in the UK.

Police say they have arrested a man who they believe caused thousands of dollars of damage to the sports car including a broken driver’s side window and shattered windshield.

Kay told the Daily Mail that he is devastated by the destruction of the car.

“It is a special motor car. It is a rare, special thing and I love it dearly,” he said. “It is worth a million [pounds] and the damage will cost a few quid to put right.”

According to Motor Trend which test drove a 2003 Ferrari Enzo, the car has a top speed of over 200 miles per hour and can hit zero to 60 in 3.14 seconds.

The car is perhaps best known for a 2007 accident in which actor Eddie Griffin crashed a Ferrari Enzo while promoting the film Redline. Some have speculated that the crash, which was filmed, was part of a PR campaign for the movie.

More Americans looking toward used cars

It appears that the downturn in the economy has changed many Americans outlook on the automobile with a growing number investing in used cars over new.

Dow Jones reports that the increase in the sale of used cars may be having a negative effect on automakers as more and more Americans find it unnecessary to look at new cars for reliability and safety.

“People no longer feel they have to have the nicest, newest car on the road,” Jesse Toprak, an analyst at Edmunds told the news provider. “They’re realizing that the used cars of today are not the used cars of a few years ago, and that realization is not positive for new car sales.”

The number of people moving to used cars is only expected to increase. Tom Webb, chief economist with Manheim Consulting told Dow Jones that the leases of 2.6 million cars and trucks are expected to come due this year, meaning an influx of late model used cars onto the market.

Used cars have also seen their prices drop over the last year. According to the National Automobile Dealers Association, the prices of used cars across the board dropped in 2008.

24 attempts to make car crashes more carbon neutral

In the world of action movies and TV shows, the car crash is about as American as apple pie. But in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint, some car crashes you will see on the screen will be friendlier to the environment than in the past.

The hit Fox TV show 24 is attempting to become the first “carbon neutral” show on television and according to the New York Times, executives are looking at ways to decrease the carbon dioxide emissions from the multiple car explosions on the program.

Since the show quickly discovered that it would be impossible to remove car crashes with explosions from the show, they decided to buy carbon offsets in the form of wind energy from India, according to the news provider.

Producers told the Times that they bought enough wind energy to offset 1,291 tons of carbon emission, which will account for a little more than half of the show’s car chases and explosions.

Hollywood is increasingly adopting green car initiatives in efforts to reduce their carbon footprint. Last year a car rental agency started in Hollywood which allows stars like Penelope Cruz to show up to award shows in a fuel-efficient hybrid SUV.

Best cars for first time buyers

For many people, the purchase of their first car is one of the most memorable moments of their life, but that purchase can also be costly. To help many first-time car buyers out, MSN Autos has come up with a list of practical, safe and reliable cars that are still fun to drive.

Honda topped the list as the site says the Civic, with its inexpensive price tag and fuel-efficient engine, makes for a good initial purchase. For those looking to increase their gas mileage, drivers can look for a Civic Hybrid that gets 45 miles per gallon on the highway.

The top ten cars on the website’s list are all foreign with the exception being the Pontiac Vibe, which in reality is a Toyota Matrix with a few more bells and whistles.

The most economical car on the list is the Suzuki SX4 Sport which starts around $13,000 and which comes with a standard navigation system.

Last week Consumer Reports released its list of the most reliable used cars with the Honda Civic topping the list in the small car category.

2010 Prius officially most fuel-efficient production car in U.S.

Toyota has announced that it will have the most fuel-efficient production car in the U.S. next year when it releases the 2010 Prius with an EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 50 miles per gallon.

Next year’s model will be the third generation for the Prius, which first hit the U.S. marketing in 1997.

Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager of Toyota Division says the car has shown that a hybrid can be a practical everyday car and thinks the new features will attract even more buyers.

“The Prius has evolved with our customers over the past 10 years and is now more things to more people,” he said.

Over the last 13 years, Toyota has slowly increased the fuel efficiency of the Prius. The first generation of the car had an EPA rating of 41 miles per gallon, with the current generation inching up to 46 miles per gallon.

In addition to increased fuel economy, Toyota says the 2010 Prius will have a more powerful engine.

Reality star buys ’68 Camaro SS for boyfriend

Reality stars Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag were recently spotted by paparazzi driving around in a minto-condition 1968 Chevy Camaro SS, which is apparently an early wedding gift.

The two stars from The Hills are planning a wedding later this year and media reports say Montag bought Pratt the red muscle car as a gift for their upcoming nuptials.

In front of photographers, the camera-loving couple revved the Camaro’s engine in a California parking lot and took pictures as Montag laid across the hood of the SS complete with a red bow.

The couple are expected to marry later this year with the lead-up to the big day being filmed by MTV for the next season of The Hills.

The 1968 Camaro is the first generation of one of the classic American muscle cars that was introduced to the public in 1966.

According to the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), a baseline 1968 Camaro SS could run upwards of $34,000. Add in a 427 Engine and the price can skyrocket to around $61,000. The car’s originally selling price in 1968 was $3,038.

As more and more people head to used car lots over new they are increasingly looking at fuel-efficient cars that won’t break their bank at the pump. When considering what used car to buy Cars.com says there are a few fuel-friendly vehicles to consider.

Coming in second and third on the list are a pair of 2004-2008 Honda Civics. At 42-45 miles per gallon, the Civic Hybrid gets slightly better gas mileage than its traditional twin. Both models were redesigned in 2006, which included side curtain airbags as a standard.

Lending is still available for used car purchases

The credit crunch has made it more difficult for potential car buyers to get funding to make the purchase of a used car. But that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible.

According to TheDay.com, banks small and large say it is getting easier to get a loan to purchase a used car, although some lenders are being more conservative with their funding.

Cheryl Dunaj, vice president of retail services at Groton, Connecticut-based Ledge Light Federal Credit Union says the lender has contacted sellers in the area to let them know they have money to lend.

“We’ve been able to do loans that otherwise would not have been able to get done,” Dunaj told the website.

The company’s CFO, David Sacco said that more goes into the decision to lend than just a person’s credit rating. He says the lender will “still look at people and make decisions on what is going on in people’s lives and not (just) their credit score. Unless we give them money and try to get them back on their feet, the economy is not going to change.”

If people can get funding it’s a good time for them to buy a used car as the National Automotive Dealers Association recently announced that used car prices fell in every category in the last year.

Family-friendly features to look for in used cars

Family-friendly features to look for in used cars

When looking for a new vehicle, families on a tight budget might be in the market for a used car to ease the financial burden. MSN Autos says there are some features every family should be on the look-out for.

From safety to entertainment, even used cars today have a number of family-friendly features that can keep the kids occupied while easing parents’ minds.

Some of the latest features to save the sanity of parents and keep kids occupied during long trips are entertainment systems like rear seat DVD players and television.

For a few dollars a month, Chrysler vehicles equipped with Sirius Backseat TV can keep the children quiet as they watch programs from Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and the Disney Channel. The website says more mainstream channels like ESPN may be offered soon.

Another factor is safety. Most late model cars will come equipped with air bags, anti-lock brakes and stability control, but concerned parents can go the extra mile and look for cars with side curtain airbags and even a rearview camera which can help make sure the little ones are not behind the vehicle as you back up.

Earlier this month Edmunds reported that a half million people who would have normally purchased a new vehicle bought a used car in the past three months.
