White Star
If you’re looking for a casual neighborhood craft cocktail bar and restaurant that serves American food, look no further than White Star. White Star has two locations in the Jersey City area: 179 Warren St. and 230 Brunswick St. Both feature a happy hour deal from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with the same specials. Discounts include $6 draft beers, $7 wines, and $9 select cocktails. Start with happy hour, and then stay for the food.
Start with the wild mushroom flatbread, drunken mussels, or bang bang shrimp to get your tastebuds fired up. White Star also offers bar snacks, such as buffalo wings, pretzel dippers, fried pickles, and street corn, for those just looking for something to munch on during happy hour. Perhaps the sliders or nachos grande will go best with your $6 draft beer?
If you’re staying for dinner, check out their craft burger menu that includes the Exchange, an 8-ounce Pat La Frieda patty with crumbled blue cheese and sugar-cured bacon, topped with Frank’s RedHot sauce. You can also get a Knife & Fork Burrito stuffed with yellow rice, black refried beans, pico de gallo, queso, four cheese blend, guacamole, salsa roja, and sour cream. Add your choice of steak, shrimp, herb-marinated chicken, chorizo, or portobello mushrooms. You can get oysters for just a dollar each on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, as the happy hour special. If the oysters are only enough to get you started, you can stay for the crawfish, lobster, blue crab, shrimp, and more, made with your choice of flavors, such as garlic butter, Cajun, lemon pepper, or O’Bay. Add a side order of potatoes, sausages, steamed rice, egg noodles, coleslaw, boiled eggs, or corn for a little extra something.
Latham House
Another great restaurant serving American cuisine is the Latham House at 299 Marin Blvd. in Jersey City. Enjoy happy hour at Latham House from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. Specials include $6 draft beers, $7 house wines, and $10 cocktails. After a cocktail or two, you may decide to stay for the food. Appetizers include French or Spanish mussels, crispy calamari, and a hummus platter. Latham House offers a seasonal menu with additional appetizers and main course options.
For dinner, you can choose from a hanger steak, black sesame-crusted organic salmon, handmade shrimp gnocchi pasta, chicken pot pie, and scallop and vegetable risotto. Latham House also has a wide selection of salads for the lighter appetite, such as the Greek Caesar or harvest salad. You can also get a burger, Reuben, or crispy chicken sandwich. Add french fries, jasmine rice, grilled asparagus, sauteed mixed vegetables, mashed potatoes with chives, bacon and sprouts, or garlic kale and spinach to complete your meal.
Emma’s
Latham House’s sister restaurant is Emma’s, located at 4 Path Plaza. Happy hour at Emma’s happens daily from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. with $5 draft beers, $6 wine on tap, and $10 select cocktails. For snacks to pair with your happy hour beverages, check out the fried buffalo wings, Emma’s Naughty Nachos, Frito pie, or grilled Mexican street corn. Sliders and sandwiches include fried catfish sliders, marinated shrimp tacos, pulled pork, shrimp po’boys, burgers, and quesadillas.
If dinner sounds good to you after happy hour ends, check out Emma’s blackened catfish plate, southern fried chicken dinner, smoked brisket plate, chicken fried steak, or grilled organic salmon. Sides include Emma’s buttermilk biscuits, grits, mashed potatoes, kale, sweet potato fries, hand-cut fries, picnic slaw, and broccoli. Lucky 7
At Lucky 7, you’ll find a $5 PBR (Pabst Blue Ribbon beer) and a bourbon shot each day as the happy hour deal. In addition to the daily happy hour special, Lucky 7 has Ladies’ Night on Thursdays and specials for the NFL games during football season. After a couple of PBRs and shots of bourbon, you may be ready to grab something to eat. Lucky 7 has a short but delicious menu featuring wings, sides, and sandwiches.
Sides include tots, fries, Totchos, a big pretzel, plain pizza, or pepperoni pizza. Wings come as either a seven-, 12-, or 20-piece option. Lucky 7 makes a mean hamburger, or you can go with the grilled chicken sandwich, chicken tenders, or hot dogs. Lucky 7 is located at 322 Second St. in Jersey City and operates from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Thursday, staying open until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and opening at noon on Sunday.
The Pint
The Pint features one of the best happy hours in Jersey City, with cheap drinks at a fun bar with friendly bartenders. You can get $5 well drinks, $4 Miller Lite and Yuengling, and $6 sangria and wine every day until 7 p.m. Enjoy the complimentary hot popcorn with your happy hour drinks at The Pint.
