Tips on Making the Transmission Last Longer

gearbox

The transmission is an important piece of machinery in your vehicle. In fact, it is only second to your vehicle’s engine. The repairs as well as replacing the part is a costly affair. Take care of it properly and you will be able to avoid unnecessary repairs and extend the life of your vehicle’s transmission. Following tips will help you to take care of the part properly.

  • Service the transmission periodically, every 2 years or 30,000 miles. Do an overall transmission flush (including cooler lines, transmission cooler, and the torque converter) every 40,000 miles. If possible, make bands adjustment every 60,000 miles. This may be costly, however, in the long run, it will be worth it.
  • The fluid can go a long way in extending the life of your transmission. Check the fluid on a regular basis. If you are using a petroleum-based fluid, consider upgrading to synthetic fluid. They hold up much better to heat. Over a longer period of time, they hold up much better to their properties as well. Keep in mind that it is vital to use the right type of fluid for your vehicle.
  • Add an additional filter to the cooler line. It will help to provide an extra protection to the fluid from contaminants.
  • A transmission cooler of good quality, preferably one with a built-in fan, will provide extra protection to the transmission. Heat is bad for transmission. Keeping the transmission as cool as possible will help to prolong its life. It is also important to maintain the cooling system. Service it every 2 years. Maintenance should include radiator cap pressure test, thermostat check, inspection of belts and hoses, checking for damage and leaks, checking the coolant levels, and antifreeze replacement.

Explaining Exactly What is Wrong with your Car can Save you Money!

shutterstock_332302781

You know your car better than anyone else. You will be able to feel it if there is something wrong with it. It is important that you note down each and everything whenever you feel something wrong or different with your car, no matter how small or silly, if you are serious about saving money in car repairs. If you notice a burning smell, note it down. If you notice a slight vibration in the steering wheel, note it down. If you hear a sound not associated with the normal functioning of your car, note it down. Also, note down when it happens, for instance, when you are going over a certain speed or climbing a hill, and so on. Note down how many times it happens as well. Keeping a log like this will help you to effectively communicate with the auto-mechanic whenever you take your car for repairs.

It is very important that you effectively communicate with your car mechanic. Agreed that he/she is much more knowledgeable about vehicles in general than you, however, the more information you could provide him/her about your car, the more efficient they will be able to work. You may think that a small clicking sound coming from the engine room may be too small or silly a reason to mention to the mechanic, but it may actually help to save you a lot of money. The reason why it is important to mention that small clicking sound is that, to the mechanic who deals with all kind of car problems day in and day out, that clicking sound may be significant. He/She may be able to directly go to the source of the problem, instead of working all around the problem and finally finding it.

Never Ignore Dashboard Warning Lights

shutterstock_215790505

Drivers have the tendency to ignore dashboard lights at times thus exposing themselves and their fellow travelers to potential hazards. When you are driving a vehicle, there are chances that any of the dashboard lights have been switched on because of a number of reasons. While there are certain warning lights that have been made as specific cases for individual brands, there are certain others that are common to all cars.

Remember not all the warning lights mean the same thing. While red warning light points towards a serious problem, an orange or a yellow light means that any of the electrical or mechanical components is in requirement of an immediate rehaul. If the light continues to flash, you should make it a point to contact your dealership immediately. A blue or a green light means that there is nothing to worry for the moment and that a specific system is working as it should be.

Remember that if a critical light has switched itself on, it should immediately be resolved. Consequently, the car needs to be stopped and allowed to be handed over for repair work. Ignoring the signal means that you are not only putting yourself at a greater risk, but all the warranty conditions are becoming void.

Make sure that you know the meanings of the specific warning lights and take steps to address the same immediately.

Just in case you want to buy a car for yourself, do make it a point to visit the New Jersey State Auto Auction store today.

What to Do to Store Your Used Car for a Nasty NY Winter

To protect your car from the volatile weather of winter, it’s a good idea to put it in storage. However, it’s not as easy as just parking it in a garage, covering it, locking the door, and walking away until April. At our used car dealership serving NY, we have some tips to help you get the most out of storing your car for the winter.

Creature Comforts

First of all, don’t store a dirty car. This may seem simple, but before you leave it for the winter, your vehicle must be thoroughly detailed. Even if it doesn’t seem “dirty” per se, it will need some level of care in places you may not have considered. Apply a protective coating to unpainted metal parts of your used car (avoiding any areas of the car that get very hot, as spray-on coating is very flammable), as they can be prone to rusting, especially during a wet New York winter. If you decide to steam clean the interior, do so a healthy amount of time before storage to avoid mold or mildew buildup, and then place a few packages of desiccant on the floor of your vehicle to keep moisture out for the season.

Mind the Mechanics

“Remove and store your car battery to make sure it runs reliably when it’s finally time to get back behind the wheel.”

Tires, fluids, and power sources- these are all things troubled by cold, even on cars that are driven all year. Special attention must be paid to these components when it’s time to put your vehicle away for the winter. For example, overinflate the tires (without exceeding the maximum air pressure) because the tires will deflate over the course of the winter. Add fuel stabilizer to keep the gas in your tank in premium condition, as normal fuel has a shelf life of around three months. Remove and store your car battery to make sure it runs reliably when it’s finally time to get back behind the wheel.
Make sure you do your research to ensure all the proper steps are taken to preserve your vehicle before you store it for the winter. If you want to get one last tuneup before it’s time to pack it up, contact us to schedule a service appointment!

Can Your Used Car Handle a Jersey City Winter?

It seems like we’re in for another brutal winter here in New Jersey, but as we all know, garden state residents are undeterred by snow, ice, or cold. A state with just about every weather extreme requires knowledgeable drivers that can handle it all. That’s why we’ve put together some tips for winter driving, straight from the staff at our Jersey City used car dealership! Take a look at this advice and make sure you’re prepped for winter.

Before You Go

There are some steps that you should take before winter hits. First, make sure the vital components of your used car are in top condition. This includes making sure the tires are fresh and have enough tread to make it through ice and snow- if not, take it to our Jersey City used car repair center and we’ll be happy to replace them or even install winter tires. Factors such as oil levels, battery condition, and windshield wipers are all things that can affect the quality of your ride this winter.

“Once the weather outside is frightful, try your best to stay inside or at least off the road.”

Once the weather outside is frightful, try your best to stay inside or at least off the road. However, if you do need to head out, there are some precautions you need to take before you leave your parking space. First of all, warm up your car to keep it efficient. To pass the time while it warms up, clear the ice and snow off your car and, if needed, dig out your wheels. As a reminder, it is illegal to drive a snow-covered car in New Jersey, so make sure  it’s clean- especially the roof, where the snow can fly out and hit the vehicle behind you, obscuring their vision and creating a dangerous situation.

On the Go

Many people are intimidated by driving in the winter, but with the proper technique, the mystery evaporates. Approach with caution, heightened awareness, increased concentration, and with less speed. If you lose control of your car and start to skid, steer in the direction you want the car to go and keep steady but light pressure on the accelerator. This advice flies in the face of the “steer into the skid” instructions some drivers receive, but it is the best way to regain control of your vehicle.

If you want to make sure your vehicle is winter-ready, visit our dealership. Our service technicians will give it a thorough inspections to make sure everything is in working order, ready for inclement weather.

  • Power outlets: Up your game by using your vehicle’s power outlet. These are standard on many cars, trucks, vans and SUVs, and have a ton of possibilities. Plug in a blender to give your guests a more diverse menu, or plug in a TV or radio to tune into the game. Don’t forget to make sure that your car’s power supply can provide enough juice for what you’re plugging in!
  • USB ports: Make sure your truck or SUV has a few USB ports not only to keep your mobile devices charged while you stay up-to-date on the game, but to use any available mobile syncing. Vehicles like the Chevy Silverado and the GMC Sierra showcase a dedication to modernity with an abundance of available power sources.
  • Satellite radio: Never miss a moment when you opt for satellite radio. You’ll be glad you did when you have a variety of sports programming to choose from. Tune to any number of games, even when you’re far from your home team.
  • Power liftgate: You won’t regret diverging from the “tailgate” aspect when the weather is rough or you’re in need of shade. Though the tailgate may be traditional, many will find the liftgate on SUVs to be more versatile.
