Earthquake leading to high prices on Prius, Fit

The fallout from the Japanese earthquake and subsequent tsunami is still unfolding, but it already appears that the quake will have major effects on the auto industry in America.

Despite many of Honda, Toyota and Nissan's Japanese factories operating at limited capacity, it's unknown when the country's shipping will be straightened out, nor whether maller parts suppliers will be able to rebuild. For the time being, many are predicting a small shortage on some popular models exclusively manufactured in Japan, such as the Toyota Prius and Honda Fit.

That means that many buyers are accelerating their purchase timelines and making offers on vehicles now, leading to a spike in prices. These cars were already in high demand thanks to the recent increase in fuel costs, but the situation in Japan is complicating matters by leading to dealer shortages and high prices on the remaining models.

Fortunately, those considering these models could be in luck – if they have a trade-in. Brian Allan, general manager at Galpin dealerships in Los Angeles, told USA Today that many dealers are looking for used cars right now since the recession cut down on the number of trade-in vehicles, which means higher prices for trades can take some of the sting out of the price increases.

Drivers who are interested in smaller, fuel-efficient vehicles will have a decision to make: act soon before prices really skyrocket or hold off until the hubbub dies down. Either way, they might want to consider shopping at New Jersey State Auto Auction for deals on any type of vehicle.

Japanese automakers assess earthquake damage

The massive earthquake that struck Japan on Friday has forced the country's major automakers to suspend all production at their manufacturing plants indefinitely, as the companies take stock of the damage caused by the natural disaster.

Japan was rocked by an 9.0-magnitude earthquake, which also triggered a subsequent tsunami. Many of the factories for Toyota, Honda and Nissan are located in the central part of the main island, which only suffered minor damage from the earthquake and avoided the tsunami completely. However, the Tohoku region, just north of Tokyo, was hit particularly bad, and the three companies suffered damage to more than a dozen plants in the area.

In addition, the status of the part suppliers used by the companies is unknown at this time.

"Our first priority on Friday was, are our people OK?" Nissan communications and marketing director Simon Sproule told the Detroit News. "What's uncertain now is the extent of the damage to suppliers, particularly small suppliers in remote areas. That's what we're looking at now."

All three automakers have released statements that reveal they are still trying to determine the extent of the damage. In terms of vehicles sold in the U.S., most are made at plants located within North America. However, some select models, like the Scion xD and xB, Acura RL, Honda CR-Z and Toyota Yaris are made exclusively in Japan and are imported. There is currently no timetable for when production will resume.

Car buyers responding to fuel price increases

The whims of car buyers can change frequently, but one of the biggest influences in purchasing decisions is the current state of fuel prices.

When fuel prices were down throughout 2010, many automakers reported sales gains for SUVs and pickup trucks. However, now that the average price for a gallon of gas is back up to $3.50, shoppers are increasingly looking to hybrids and compacts, USA Today reports.

A recent survey by AutoTrader found that 53 percent of respondents indicated that they were considering switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle as a direct result of rising prices. A similar poll by Kelley Blue Book found that four out of five consumers were influenced by gas prices in February, which was an 11 percent increase over January.

Those trends are showing up in sales figures as well. As compared to February 2010, Toyota's Prius hybrid saw a 70 percent increase in sales last month, according to AutoData. The Honda Civic and Ford Fusion hybrids similarly saw increases of 54 and 12 percent, respectively.

Drivers looking to save money on their next vehicle may want to consider New Jersey State Auto Auction. The company offers a wide range of a fuel-efficient cars for sale at affordable prices.

Honda, Chrysler and Toyota announce recalls

Three major automakers have issued recall notices for some popular used car models, with nearly 75,000 vehicles recalled in total.

Honda recalled the most vehicles, with the company putting out a notice for more than 35,000 Civic Hybrids in the 2006 and 2007 model years. The company says that there may be a problem with the cars' voltage converter, which provides power to the motor. Should the converter fail, the engine could possibly stall. Honda claims that seven people have contacted the automaker with reports of stalling, while 82 warranty claims were made with regard to the converter.

Toyota will also be recalling vehicles, specifically FJ Cruisers, Sequoias, Tacomas, Tundras and Land Cruisers made between 2008 and 2010. Approximately 22,000 of these vehicles may have an issue with the tire pressure monitoring system, which may fail to notify a driver when their tires are running low on air.

Finally, Chrysler has announced that it will be recalling nearly 20,000 Jeep Wranglers from the 2010 and 2011 model years, with the issue being attributed to the fasteners on the axle. The company revealed that the fasteners may become loose, which could potentially cause a loss of control in the vehicle.

Drivers in the market for a new or used vehicle should consider New Jersey State Auto Auction, which offers a wide range of vehicles at affordable prices.

Toyota sells 3 millionth used car

Toyota has announced that it has become the first single line manufacturer to sell 3 million used cars backed by a certified pre-owned program.

The Japanese manufacturer is the largest automaker in the world, so it's somewhat unsurprising that it became the first to sell 3 million used vehicles under a factory-backed program. Still, Toyota celebrated the news with some special deals for its 3 millionth customer.

Sara Hirschhorn of Chicago, Illinois, was presented with a check reimbursing her for the $22,500 that she spent on a used Toyota Sienna minivan, essentially giving her the car for free. Toyota also made a donation to the hospital that Hirschhorn works at in her name. The company noted that the Sienna was a "smart choice," as it has been named the minivan with the best resale value by Kelley Blue Book two years running.

"Our sales success in 2010 validates the tremendous confidence that our customers have in the Toyota brand," Bob Carter, Toyota group vice president and general manager, said in a statement. "Our Toyota Certified Used Vehicle program helps our dealers to build a strong portfolio of customers that frequently return to buy a new or certified pre-owned Toyota."

Drivers interested in a used Toyota or any other vehicle may want to check out New Jersey State Auto Auction. They probably won't end up with a free car, but there are plenty of models priced well below their Blue Book value.

Report exonerates Toyota for sudden acceleration

A new report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and NASA has revealed that electronic systems in Toyota models are not to blame for sudden acceleration in some vehicles, despite widespread speculation.

In fact, the report, which was the result of a ten-month study by the groups, largely cleared Toyota of any wrongdoing in relation to the numerous crashes and accidents blamed on "sudden acceleration." Toyota eventually addressed the issue by recalling and fixing vehicles for sticking pedals and floor mats, but continuously denied any fault in the programming of the electronic systems.

The study found that the floor mats only contributed in one instance, where the mat became dislodged and trapped the accelerator. In the rest of the cases, it was actually driver error – hitting the gas rather than the brake – that led to the crashes.

"The jury is back, the verdict is in," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "There is no electronic-based cause for unintended high-speed acceleration in Toyotas. Period."

Drivers who were holding off on purchasing a used Toyota may want to reconsider, as the report essentially deems the vehicles safe to drive. Those interested in these or any other vehicles may want to visit New Jersey State Auto Auction, which offers a wide variety of models at low prices.

Final sales tally shakes up global order

The final sales figures for 2010 are in, and there's been quite a shakeup in the rankings of automakers by global sales.

Toyota was able to retain its title as the world's largest automaker, despite a significant challenge from General Motors. In a year marred by recalls, Toyota saw its global sales lead dwindle, but still managed to sell 8.42 million vehicles, edging out GM's total of 8.39 million cars sold worldwide. Volkswagen was a distant third with 7.14 million vehicles sold.

Hyundai and its Kia brand had a fantastic year, as the two nameplates combined to sell 5.74 million vehicles, making it the fourth-largest automaker in the world. That was enough to push it past Ford by about 400,000 vehicles.

The biggest story, however, might just be Nissan, as the Japanese brand's alliance with French automaker Renault is paying dividends. Nissan surpassed Honda as Japan's second-largest automaker for the first time in decades, with strong showings in India, Russia and China. Although Nissan and Renault totaled their vehicles separately, a combined tally for the companies would make it the third-largest automaker in the world, unseating Volkswagen.

As the auto industry begins booming again and manufacturers start introducing new models, it's a great time to shop for a vehicle. Those searching for a car may want to check out New Jersey State Auto Auction, which boasts a massive selection and rock-bottom prices.

Toyota expanding Prius offerings

The Prius has been the top selling hybrid of the last decade, and whether an eco-conscious buyer is shopping for a new or used car, it's likely near the top of the list. So it should come as no surprise that Toyota is looking to parlay its successful model into an entire range of offerings.

At the recent North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, the Japanese automaker announced the new "Prius family" consisting of the existing Prius and three brand new models, one of which is still in the concept stage. The company hopes that the varied offerings will appeal to a broader customer base than the existing sedan Prius can.

First up is the new Prius v, which the company says stands for "versatile." This hybrid wagon is designed to compete with crossovers, SUVs and vehicles aimed at families.

Going in the opposite direction in terms of size is the Prius c, the compact Prius. Although still just a concept, Toyota hopes that this version of the Prius will be able to take on smaller hybrids, like the Honda Fit, and provide an affordable option for eco-conscious consumers.

Finally, the company also unveiled the new Prius Plug-in, which is expected to go toe-to-toe with the Chevrolet Volt, Nissan Leaf and other EVs rumored to be in the works by other automakers.

The Prius can be a bit expensive, so drivers looking for a hybrid option now may want to check out the used car market for some slightly more affordable options.

Consumer Reports reveals Brand Perception study

With so many new and used car brands to pick from, drivers in the market for a vehicle need to consider several important factors in choosing the right car for them. But even once they've narrowed it down to a particular type of vehicle, like an SUV, they'll still need to choose among the various vehicles within that segment, many of which will be competitively priced and boast similar features.

This is where brand perception comes into play. What sets a Volvo SUV apart from one made by Nissan? While these vehicles might have similar performance characteristics, most drivers will identify Volvo as a brand that focuses on safety, while Nissan has a reputation for innovation and technology.

In an effort to track how customers feel about certain automakers, Consumer Reports introduced the Car Brand Perception Survey. This study talks to 1,700 drivers about the different characteristics of the major brands, asking them to rate brands on value, safety, environmental friendliness, performance, style, innovation and quality. Respondents are given points, which they assign to each automaker based on their strengths. The points are then totaled and aggregated into an overall score.

In past years, Toyota has dominated the survey, with a lead massive lead over other automakers in years past. Yet thanks to the recent recall scandal, the brand's perception has suffered, and the automaker has fallen 46 points in 2 years, according to the company.

That opened the door for Ford, which has had a fantastic turnaround in the past few years. The company gained 35 points during the same period that Toyota fell, and while it was unable to overtake the Japanese giant this year, it fell shy by just 3 points. Ford ended up with 144, good for second place beyond Toyota's 147.

However, Consumer Reports noted that Toyota's victory came largely because of a victory in the "green" environmental category, a factor that the company has found consumers actually care less and less about. Only 28 percent of respondents cited environmental friendliness as factoring into their vehicle purchase. Thanks to its Prius hybrid, Toyota scored a 46 in that category, dominating Ford in second place with 18. Yet Ford beat Toyota in categories like safety, value, performance and style.

Other brands posted strong showings as well. Honda came in third with 121 points and was cited as better than Ford and Toyota in terms of quality. However, the brand has lost 28 points over the past two years. Chevrolet was in fourth, although it lost 22 points in the past two years as well.

BMW posted a strong showing as usual, in fifth place with 93 points and the overall winner of the performance and styling categories. Its German rival Mercedes-Benz was close behind with 90 points and was also considered the most innovative.

Finally, the survey also released the names of some brands that finished particularly poorly. Isuzu only managed an overall score of two, with Suzuki and Mitsubishi coming out with a five and eight, respectively.

Consumer Reports reveals top searches for 2010

Before purchasing a new or used car, most drivers engage in a significant amount of research. Thanks to the power of the internet, it's now possible for websites to track that data and see which cars buyers were most interested in.

Consumer Reports is one of the more popular websites, as the guide puts a focus on safety, reliability and value. The company has built a database of new and used car info that gives registered users the lowdown on each vehicle via "model overview pages." In order to detail some of the more popular vehicles for 2010, the company released data on which of these pages got the most hits throughout the year.

In terms of used cars, Honda vehicles were by far the most popular. The Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V and Pilot occupied the top four spots on the list, possibly suggesting that the brand has supplanted Toyota as one of the top used car choices in the wake of this year's recall scandal.

However, Toyota wasn't completely left off the list. The Camry and Highlander came in at #9 and #10 on the used car list, respectively, while the RAV-4 placed eighth on the new listing.

The used BMW 3 Series continues to be a year-in and year-out top seller for the German automaker, earning one of the rare sedan spots on the list. The vast majority of the spots were awarded to SUVs and crossovers, many of which were seen on both lists. The Acura MDX and Hyundai Santa Fe appear on both, with Hyundai's Sonata also placing eighth on the new car list.

There was also a correlation between the website's own "top picks" and which cars got the most clicks. The Subaru Forester, for instance, was the top-rated new car and also had quite a few people searching for new models after it was recommended by the guide in April.

Interestingly, all of the cars on the used list were foreign, while domestic automakers posted a stronger showing for new cars. The Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Traverse each made the new car list, with cars from Chrysler noticeably absent.

Drivers considering purchasing a vehicle should be sure to do comprehensive research ahead of time in order to make an informed decision. They should also keep in mind that by shopping used cars for sale, they can save significantly off new ones.
