IIHS names six small cars as “Top Safety Picks”

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety routinely tests batches of vehicles to determine its "Top Safety Picks," an award that's been coveted by the automotive industry in the past. The group recently took a look at 13 small cars and crossovers, and found that six were worthy of the prestigious title.

Of the cars tested, only the Ford Focus, Toyota Prius, Nissan Juke, Lexus CT200h, Hyundai Elantra and Honda Civic were able to perform well enough to receive the award. The IIHS maintains that all vehicles must earn the highest rating of "good" on front, side, rear and rollover tests to qualify.

This tough requirement can lead to disappointment for some brands, as the Honda Insight and CR-Z found out in this round of testing. Both cars earned good ratings on all tests except the rollover, where they were merely "acceptable." Similarly, the Scion xD had three good tests, save for an "acceptable" front impact crash.

Other models, such as the Suzuki SX4 and Dodge Caliber, did not fare as well, with multiple tests deemed merely "acceptable" and even a few "marginal" thrown in.

If you're in the market for a safe and reliable vehicle that won't break the bank, check out New Jersey State Auto Auction. They have many "Top Safety Picks" of past and present available at reasonable prices.

Kia upgrades Sorento crossover with new engine

Kia has announced that its Sorento crossover will be getting an upgrade for the 2012 model year, with a new engine expected to boost fuel efficiency and performance.

Official EPA numbers aren't available for the new 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, but USA Today says it will "almost certainly boost gas mileage" for the crossover, which already earned 21 miles per gallon in the city and 29 on the highway, very good numbers for a crossover vehicle.

On the performance front, the new engine uses direct injection technology, a change for the brand. Autoblog states that horsepower will be boosted from 175 to 200 for the new Sorento. Typically, upgrades to fuel economy and performance are mutually exclusive: a bigger engine means more fuel usage. So this is a rare coup for the South Korean automaker that's sure to move some models.

The Sorento will also enjoy an upgrade on the interior, courtesy of the new UVO hands-free "infotainment" system. Kia and its parent brand Hyundai are beginning to incorporate UVO into their vehicles, so it makes sense that the family-friendly crossover would be one of the first to get the treatment.

That said, new car prices are high right now, so drivers may want to hold off for the time being. Waiting for the Sorento to hit the used car market can bring drivers significant savings.

Hyundai ends job-loss protection

Hyundai is dropping its job-loss guarantee program, which gained national attention during the economic downturn, in a sign that the nation may finally begin to recover from the sky-high unemployment numbers of the past few years.

The South Korean automaker introduced the Hyundai Assurance plan in January of 2009, according to the Detroit Free Press. Essentially, the automaker felt that many buyers were ready to make a purchase on a vehicle, but were worried about their job security in the tough economy. So Hyundai offered drivers an escape clause. If they financed or leased a vehicle and then lost their job within the first year of owning the car, Hyundai would take the vehicle back and the driver would be free of their financial obligation.

It's tough to quantify how many people ended up buying a car because of the guarantee, but analysts say that the Assurance program at least partially accounted for the strong sales that Hyundai showed even during the economic downturn. Hyundai says that it ultimately took cars back from 350 people who lost their job.

Now, however, Hyundai says that not many people are taking advantage of the program, which the automaker says is a good sign.

"It's another small indication that things are getting a little bit better," spokesman Jim Trainor told the news source.

New Hyundai Elantra GLS could threaten Honda’s Civic dominance

The Honda Civic has long been the reigning king of small sedans, in both sales and critical acclaim. Yet South Korean automaker Hyundai has been making waves in recent months with its well-designed vehicles that often come in much cheaper than the competition.

According to CNET, the Civic "should definitely be afraid" of the new Elantra GLS. The news provider was able to get some one-on-one time with the new vehicle, and they came away thoroughly impressed.

Hyundai markets the new Elantra as "the compact car other compact car makers don't want you to know about," and it seems like there's something to the hype. In terms of performance, CNET only preferred the Honda's handling to the Hyundai. The Elantra beats its Japanese counterpart in both pure power and fuel economy. Plus, it comes with a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty, which is the best in the industry.

The interiors of the two vehicles are pretty similar, although the Elantra does have an option for a rearview camera, which isn't offered by Honda.

As tested, CNET reports that the Elantra GLS would have ran them about $20,230 – approximately $3,000 less than a similarly-equipped Civic. There's no doubt that the new Elantra will give drivers great value, but those interested in the vehicle may want to wait until it hits the used car market before committing to a purchase so that they can save even more.

Mazda recall weaves a tangled web

Arachnophobes beware: Mazda is recalling 52,000 Mazda6 sedans for problem related to the eight-legged crawlers.

Apparently, a certain species of spider, the yellow sac, is attracted to the evaporative canister vent line. The problem is that these creatures will infest the vent and begin to spin webs, which will in turn block the necessary vapor from traveling through the line, possibly leading to leaks or stalling in the engine. Mazda plans to insert a spring into the vent to prevent spiders from nesting in there.

It's certainly a first to recall a car for a spider problem, but the Mazda6 isn't the only vehicle suffering from the issue. Honda issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) in 2009 for the same problem in 2008-2009 Accords. The TSB is a step down from a full recall because the issue won't effect vehicle performance in the Accord – although it may cause the "check engine" light to come on.

Hyundai similarly issued a TSB for the same vent line, saying that problems with it could be caused by debris or possibly spiders. Again, the Hyundai vehicles don't appear to have any serious ramifications like the Mazdas do.

Drivers who shop at New Jersey State Auto Auction will be able to choose from a wide range of vehicles, which is a good thing – because arachnophobes will probably want to steer clear of these vehicles.

Sedan version of Hyundai Genesis Coupe in the works?

Hyundai has announced that it may be expanding its luxury offerings by debuting a new sedan based off of its current Genesis Coupe.

According to Automotive News, the South Korean automaker is looking to create an entry-level sedan that could compete with vehicles like the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Acura TL. The Genesis Coupe has been a successful luxury vehicle for the company, so the automaker is currently considering a model that is based off the car's sharp styling cues.

"The Genesis Coupe is in the same segment, really, as the 3-Series coupe," Hyundai CEO John Krafcik told the news source. "One of the things we're thinking is: Should we do something that's a sedan version of that?"

Although only recently talked about, unidentified sources with knowledge of the automaker's plans told the news source that the car had been in development for some time now, dating back to 2006. Hyundai execs call the vehicle the "RK" internally.

Those interested in a used Hyundai or any other vehicle may want to seek out an online third-party provider of auto financing. These companies can allow drivers to negotiate with dealers using cash, which puts them in a stronger position when it comes time to talk about the price of a car.

Griffin’s dunk gives Kia Optima national exposure

Many automakers focused the bulk of their early marketing efforts this year around extensive Super Bowl campaigns, but Hyundai's budget brand Kia may have just scored a massive coup with a cameo during the NBA's All-Star Weekend.

The Kia Optima was one of the official sponsors of the event, but the model got some extra exposure when it was prominently featured in the finals of the Slam Dunk Contest. Going into the contest, Los Angeles Clippers star Blake Griffin was the odds-on favorite to win the title, as he's dazzled fans with some thunderous dunks on an almost nightly basis.

Griffin did not disappoint with his final dunk of the night. It required a bit of setup, but the Optima was driven out onto the hardwood for the spot. Griffin's teammate Baron Davis then got in the car with a ball. Then, a full chorus took center court and began belting out "I Believe I Can Fly."

It was at that point that Griffin jumped over the hood of the car, caught a pass from Davis in mid-air and slammed it home, cementing his victory in the competition.

Griffin may have won the event, but the Kia's role in the stunt was a marketing coup – as it will surely be featured again and again in countless highlight videos.

Hyundai details lineup changes

Hyundai has been enjoying a wealth of success as of late, and the company is looking to continue that with three new updates to its existing lineup.

The South Korean automaker recently showed off some of the changes expected for the company throughout 2011 at the North American Dealers Association (NADA) convention in San Francisco.

Of the scheduled changes, the two-door Elantra coupe could likely be the closest thing to a brand-new model. This car will offer the same performance options and ergonomics as the standard Elantra sedan, but in a sleek two-door coupe shell.

According to the Automotive News, dealers were perhaps most enthusiastic about the redesigned Azera. Hyundai has given the car a stylish facelift for the 2012 model year, but performance-oriented consumers will likely be impressed by the new engine as well. The direct-injection V6 upgrades the horsepower to 260 while also improving on the existing model's fuel economy.

Finally, the Genesis R-Spec is a new high-end luxury trim level aimed at performance enthusiasts. Expected to retail for around $50,000, the R-Spec will reportedly offer 429 horsepower coupled with a new eight-speed automatic transmission.

Sonata Hybrid eschews tradition in quest for mileage

The new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid features an EPA-rated 40 miles per gallon on the highway, which leads its class and beats out popular models like the Ford Fusion and Nissan Altima hybrids. So how did Hyundai's engineers pull it off?

CNET recently profiled the innovative powertrain lurking in every Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. Engineers were given a task to maximize the car's fuel economy, so they started by sculpting the body in order to make it as aerodynamic as possible, which reduces drag and slightly increases mpgs.

Hybrids are at their best when the electric motor is powering the car, but many of the strategies for achieving this are patented by the South Korean automaker's top rivals. So Hyundai invented the TMED, a transmission-mounted electrical device. The TMED features the motor and clutch in one package, allowing the car to use an automatic transmission without a torque converter. The system not only lets Hyundai to get the best gas mileage on the highway in its class, but also run up to 75 miles per hour on electric power alone.

Looking for an upgrade to your own mileage? Then it might be wise to trade your vehicle in for a new one, as technology has increased significantly in recent years, leading to drastically increased mileage ratings without a significant dip in power. Those interested may want to head to New Jersey State Auto Auction, which features a wide variety of vehicles available for well below Kelley Blue Book value.

Sonata named most valuable car

Strategic Vision has released the results of its fourteenth-annual Total Value Index, and the 2011 Hyundai Sonata has not only earned the title of the year's most valuable vehicle, but also the best of all time.

The consulting company uses an exhaustive process of measuring 442 separate data points on a vehicle in order to get an overall picture of a car's strengths and weaknesses. That information is then weighted against the vehicle's price to determine which cars offer the most bang for the buck.

The 2011 Sonata not only blew away the competition, but set a new record for the most points ever earned in the study with 860 points, causing the group to create a new award for the vehicle.

"When the data came back on the 2011 Hyundai Sonata, it was so impressive it prompted us to re-examine it several times to be certain." said Strategic Vision President Alexander Edwards. "The findings were solid with particular superiority among owners ranking value for money, technical innovation, standard equipment, fuel economy and a great warranty all wrapped in vehicle with eye catching styling."

The Hyundai Genesis came in a close second with 852 points, while the Audi A8 was third with 821 points.
