Ford recalls F-150s under government pressure

Ford has announced that it will recall 144,000 F-150 pickup trucks from the 2005 and 2006 model years for an issue in which the airbag may deploy without cause.

In November 2010, the company was made aware of the issue in a memo from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The NHTSA requested that Ford look into the issue after it received 238 separate complaints that resulted in 77 injuries.

The government agency recommended that Ford recall all 1.3 million trucks manufactured between 2004 and 2006. However, Ford has limited the recall to a subset of that. According to the company, all of the incidents could be traced to a specific shift at the plant in Norfolk, Virginia. The automaker believes that an airbag wire may have been installed incorrectly, making it liable for a short circuit.

When the vehicle is turned on, it can cause the wire to accidentally trigger the airbag. That means that most of the cases occurred in driveways while the car was stopped, although the NHTSA claims that a few were on public roadways.

The NHTSA has said it will investigate the matter and determine if the limited recall will adequately address the issue.

Drivers interested in a used Ford F-150 may want to avoid the 2005 and 2006 model years for the time being, but they'll be able to find a wide range of other pickup trucks at New Jersey State Auto Auction.

ClearBook hopes to ease trade-in process

When planning to sell or trade your car, it can be difficult to determine exactly how much it's worth. Some websites will quote one price, while others another. And when you finally get to the dealer, rarely is the price in the same ballpark. But is the dealer playing hardball, or are you just getting faulty information?

Used car pricing is a bit tricky because every car is different. Mileage is a good indicator of the general condition of the car, but then there are 100,000 mile cars that run great and 50,000 mile cars with service histories a mile long.

A new website called ClearBook.com is hoping to make things a bit easier, according to the New York Times. Sites like Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds have strong reputations for providing prices, but the folks behind TrueCar argue that their prices are ultimately determined by editorial guidance and estimates.

ClearBook instead combs the web for millions of used car listings and sorts by make, model and mileage. It then averages out the data so that customers can see the full range of prices that the vehicle is selling for.

In the future, the creators told the news source that they hope to incorporate actual transaction data from buyers and sellers in order to give buyers better context for the price ranges that they quote.

Those interested in trading their vehicle may want to consider New Jersey State Auto Auction, which offers great prices on trade-ins and a wide selection of cars for sale

Report exonerates Toyota for sudden acceleration

A new report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and NASA has revealed that electronic systems in Toyota models are not to blame for sudden acceleration in some vehicles, despite widespread speculation.

In fact, the report, which was the result of a ten-month study by the groups, largely cleared Toyota of any wrongdoing in relation to the numerous crashes and accidents blamed on "sudden acceleration." Toyota eventually addressed the issue by recalling and fixing vehicles for sticking pedals and floor mats, but continuously denied any fault in the programming of the electronic systems.

The study found that the floor mats only contributed in one instance, where the mat became dislodged and trapped the accelerator. In the rest of the cases, it was actually driver error – hitting the gas rather than the brake – that led to the crashes.

"The jury is back, the verdict is in," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "There is no electronic-based cause for unintended high-speed acceleration in Toyotas. Period."

Drivers who were holding off on purchasing a used Toyota may want to reconsider, as the report essentially deems the vehicles safe to drive. Those interested in these or any other vehicles may want to visit New Jersey State Auto Auction, which offers a wide variety of models at low prices.

Hyundai details lineup changes

Hyundai has been enjoying a wealth of success as of late, and the company is looking to continue that with three new updates to its existing lineup.

The South Korean automaker recently showed off some of the changes expected for the company throughout 2011 at the North American Dealers Association (NADA) convention in San Francisco.

Of the scheduled changes, the two-door Elantra coupe could likely be the closest thing to a brand-new model. This car will offer the same performance options and ergonomics as the standard Elantra sedan, but in a sleek two-door coupe shell.

According to the Automotive News, dealers were perhaps most enthusiastic about the redesigned Azera. Hyundai has given the car a stylish facelift for the 2012 model year, but performance-oriented consumers will likely be impressed by the new engine as well. The direct-injection V6 upgrades the horsepower to 260 while also improving on the existing model's fuel economy.

Finally, the Genesis R-Spec is a new high-end luxury trim level aimed at performance enthusiasts. Expected to retail for around $50,000, the R-Spec will reportedly offer 429 horsepower coupled with a new eight-speed automatic transmission.

Sonata named most valuable car

Strategic Vision has released the results of its fourteenth-annual Total Value Index, and the 2011 Hyundai Sonata has not only earned the title of the year's most valuable vehicle, but also the best of all time.

The consulting company uses an exhaustive process of measuring 442 separate data points on a vehicle in order to get an overall picture of a car's strengths and weaknesses. That information is then weighted against the vehicle's price to determine which cars offer the most bang for the buck.

The 2011 Sonata not only blew away the competition, but set a new record for the most points ever earned in the study with 860 points, causing the group to create a new award for the vehicle.

"When the data came back on the 2011 Hyundai Sonata, it was so impressive it prompted us to re-examine it several times to be certain." said Strategic Vision President Alexander Edwards. "The findings were solid with particular superiority among owners ranking value for money, technical innovation, standard equipment, fuel economy and a great warranty all wrapped in vehicle with eye catching styling."

The Hyundai Genesis came in a close second with 852 points, while the Audi A8 was third with 821 points.

Chevy announces Super Bowl plans

After General Motor's government bailout, the company toned down the big spending, which included a two-year hiatus from the biggest advertising day of the year: the Super Bowl. Previously one of the game's largest advertisers, the company recently announced that it will be back in a big way this year, with six all-new commercials showcasing a range of products.

"There’s no other place you can get 95 million people all at once," Chevrolet advertising director Kevin Mayer told the Detroit Free Press. "We’re really trying to reinstill that pride of putting a Chevy in your driveway, make you feel like there’s a brand that’s got some things going on."

Two of the major Chevy plans involve integration with popular culture. Chevy has again partnered with the Transformers film franchise, and one of the new ads starts off as a typical car commercial before a Chevy Camaro transforms into one of the giant robots.

While not an ad per se, GM has also announced that the episode of "Glee" following the big game will incorporate several of the company's products.

Drivers who watch the Super Bowl and feel suddenly compelled to buy a Chevy might want to head down to New Jersey State Auto Auction, which offers drivers a wide selection of GM and non-GM models at affordable prices.

Mercedes to introduce hybrid AMGs

In part as a response to tighter emission standards, Mercedes-Benz has announced that it will be offering hybrid versions of its high-performance AMG models in the near future.

Hybrids and high-performance typically don't go hand-in-hand, but the federal government's insistence on higher average mpg ratings for all brands means that automakers must be very careful with debuting any gas-guzzling sports cars, as the AMG models have been known to be. One way to combat that is by offering hybrid versions of the model, which Mercedes appears primed to do.

Mercedes' head of advanced engineering, Herbert Kohler, told Autocar: "In the future AMG will still offer high performance models but there will be hybrids there. AMG needs to reduce fuel consumption."

Hybrid technology can generally be used in two ways with regards to performance-oriented vehicles. Flywheels, ultracapacitors and high-powered batteries can actually serve to increase the available power that a car has, as Porsche will be doing on its upcoming performance hybrids. Or the automaker can incorporate stop-start technologies like regenerative braking that serve to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

For now, Mercedes appears to be taking the second route, although the models won't be here for a few years. In the meantime, drivers interested in performance or hybrid vehicles may want to shop the used car market, as both of these vehicles typically carry high price tags.

Survey: Used car sales may rise in 2011

A new survey by Consumer Reports has revealed that more American are interested in buying a used car in 2011.

As part of the Brand Perception Survey, the consumer guide asked respondents about their likelihood to consider a used car for their next vehicle purchase. In total, 71 percent of respondents said that they would be more likely to consider a used vehicle for their next car than they would have been several years ago. Forty-seven percent of that total further stipulated that they would "very likely" make a used car their next vehicle purchase.

The survey further broke down the data by revealing that 75 percent of men were considering a used car, compared to 67 percent of women surveyed.

The guide cites several advantages to buying used over new. In addition to being obviously cheaper than new cars, drivers who buy a used car avoid the rapid depreciation that occurs as soon as they drive a vehicle off of a lot. And with the lifespan of vehicles extended greatly by new technology, there isn't too much of a difference maintenance-wise in buying a used vehicle, especially if its a certified pre-owned car backed by a manufacturer's warranty.

OnStar coming to non-GM vehicles

Drivers who are sticking with their used vehicles rather than upgrading to one of the many new cars for sale might feel left out of the latest technological upgrades, like OnStar. The popular safety product has proven to be a major selling point for General Motors vehicles, but drivers who had outdated or non-GM cars have been unable to utilize the service.

That's about to change, as GM has announced plans to offer a standalone retail OnStar product in 2011 – for a price. Through an exclusive partnership with Best Buy, the company will offer a $299 OnStar mirror, designed to replace driver's current rear-view mirror and allow the driver to control the system.

In addition to the money for the mirror, drivers will also have to pay an installation fee ($75 to $100), although there may be a self-install option. Finally, activating the service requires a subscription, with plans starting at $18.95 per month.

"For years, thousands of drivers have asked us to get OnStar in vehicles that didn't feature it as standard," said OnStar President Chris Preuss. "It represents a quantum leap forward in our plans to grow our business and provide a strong new revenue base for GM and OnStar from which we can further develop our core offerings in the factory-equipped market."

Consumer Reports reveals top searches for 2010

Before purchasing a new or used car, most drivers engage in a significant amount of research. Thanks to the power of the internet, it's now possible for websites to track that data and see which cars buyers were most interested in.

Consumer Reports is one of the more popular websites, as the guide puts a focus on safety, reliability and value. The company has built a database of new and used car info that gives registered users the lowdown on each vehicle via "model overview pages." In order to detail some of the more popular vehicles for 2010, the company released data on which of these pages got the most hits throughout the year.

In terms of used cars, Honda vehicles were by far the most popular. The Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V and Pilot occupied the top four spots on the list, possibly suggesting that the brand has supplanted Toyota as one of the top used car choices in the wake of this year's recall scandal.

However, Toyota wasn't completely left off the list. The Camry and Highlander came in at #9 and #10 on the used car list, respectively, while the RAV-4 placed eighth on the new listing.

The used BMW 3 Series continues to be a year-in and year-out top seller for the German automaker, earning one of the rare sedan spots on the list. The vast majority of the spots were awarded to SUVs and crossovers, many of which were seen on both lists. The Acura MDX and Hyundai Santa Fe appear on both, with Hyundai's Sonata also placing eighth on the new car list.

There was also a correlation between the website's own "top picks" and which cars got the most clicks. The Subaru Forester, for instance, was the top-rated new car and also had quite a few people searching for new models after it was recommended by the guide in April.

Interestingly, all of the cars on the used list were foreign, while domestic automakers posted a stronger showing for new cars. The Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Traverse each made the new car list, with cars from Chrysler noticeably absent.

Drivers considering purchasing a vehicle should be sure to do comprehensive research ahead of time in order to make an informed decision. They should also keep in mind that by shopping used cars for sale, they can save significantly off new ones.
