Ford Explorer: The most fuel-efficient SUV

The Ford Explorer has long been one of the most popular SUVs on the road, and now it hopes to be among the most fuel-efficient as well. The manufacturer recently announced that its new turbocharged Explorer offers an impressive 28 miles per gallon.

Ford used its unique EcoBoost technology, which combines turbocharging and direct fuel injection to not only offer drivers with more power but better mileage as well. In fact, its improved efficiency is 20 percent better than the Honda Pilot and 12 percent better than the Toyota Highlander.

"Today's SUV buyers place a high priority on miles per gallon, so Explorer has expanded its portfolio of fuel-efficient engines with an all-new EcoBoost offering," said Ford group marketing manager Amy Marentic. "SUV buyers deserve economy with their capability, so Explorer now offers best-in-class V6 and four-cylinder fuel efficiency."

The Explorer is having an especially good 2011 (year). The company reported that in the first half of the year it sold nearly 66,000 vehicles, which already exceeds its 2010 total.

American-made SUVs enjoy solid June

Although gas prices are still high, that hasn't deterred drivers from getting behind the wheel of a new American-made SUV. According to USA Today, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler all saw strong June sales of their SUVs.

Surprisingly, the sales of SUVs even outpaced that of all U.S. automobiles. Specifically, the cars jumped 28 percen since 2010, compared to just a 7 percent rise in sales of other cars. Additionally, American-made utility vehicles sold better than international models as well, as Japanese-made cars actually had a 1 percent drop.

The best-selling model among SUVs in June was the Ford Escape. Thanks, in large part, to its smaller size, this compact vehicle enjoyed a 43 percent sales jump compared to June sales last year. The Ford Explorer and Ford Edge also performed reasonably well, the news source reports.

In addition to Ford, Chrysler group's Jeep Wrangler remained one of the most popular American sport utility vehicles.

Whether one is looking for a more compact Ford Escape or rugged Wranlger, New Jersey Auto Auction carries plenty of SUVs at affordable prices.

Muscle cars see growth in June

Hearkening back to the glory days of muscle cars, Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge are all offering powerful classic rides that not only appeal to a new generation of drivers but will certainly grab at baby boomers who lusted after the original versions of these iconic vehicles.

According to The Wall Street Journal, sales of all of the cars – the Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro, and Dodge Challenger – are on the way up. They are in fact outpacing the June growth of more family-friendly passenger cars that the big three automakers are most well-known for.

The trio, all of which bare a striking resemblance to their forebears, are not only nice to look at but pack a serious punch. The news source reports that the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 boasts 444 horsepower, while the 2012 Camaro ZLA offers 550 horsepower.

Executives say that most of the cars are being purchased either by 20 to 30-year-olds or 45 to 55-year-olds.

"We definitely see more than a baby boomer audience," Chevy marketing executive John Fitzpatrick told the Journal.

New Ford Focus to debut as pace car at Michigan International Speedway

Ford will pick a unique way to debut the 2012 Focus this weekend. USA Today reports that fuel-efficient car will be making its first public appearance as the pace car at a NASCAR event as the Michigan International Speedway.

While it may not the smallest pace car ever to lead a NASCAR race, by debuting the Focus in such a widely publicized event, it places the emphasis squarely on the car’s economical design. According to the news source, Ford estimates that the new Focus gets an impressive 40 miles per gallon on the highway, and could finish the 400-mile race without having to take a pit stop to refuel, all while still having plenty of gas left over.

The car will be driven by Mark Fields, the company’s president of the Americas. The Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 is slated to begin on Sunday.

Ford expects to triple production of electric cars by 2013

In effort to keep up with the demand for more fuel-efficient cars, Ford recently announced plans to triple its production of electric cars by 2013. The Detroit News reports that Ford hopes to build 100,000 electric vehicles a year by then, focusing primarily on making the C-Max an electric-only automobile.

The C-Max, which debuted in Europe in 2003 and is set to come to the United States, is currently only available as a two-mode hybrid. In addition to removing the gasoline option of the C-Max, Ford said that its primary concern would not be to create entirely new eco-conscious cars but to make the ones it already offers more environmentally-friendly.

"We're not electrifying a certain vehicle and making a science project for a few people. We're electrifying our core (models)," Jim Farley, Ford's president of marketing, told the news source.

Ford already offers several hybrid version of their popular cars, including the Fusion, which gets an estimated 41 miles-per-gallon. Drivers interested in a hybrid vehicle may want to consider New Jersey Auto Auction for their vehicular needs.

Camaro on top in fight with Mustang

The rivalry between the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang is always intense, and these two vehicles have traded sales dominance back and forth countless times throughout their 30-plus year history.

Recently, the relationship between these two famous models has shifted yet again, as the Camaro has been trouncing the Mustang in sales. This is a complete reversal from just a year ago, when it was the Mustang on top.

Sales totals for May show 9,451 units sold for Chevrolet, with Ford managing to move just 6,607 Mustangs. That's a big drop-off for Ford, which sold 10,225 Mustangs during the same month in 2010 – when Chevy was only able to sell 8,931 Camaros.

Still, Ford is quick to point out that the Mustang is not knocked out yet, and that high gas prices made May an unattractive month to buy a muscle car.

"Although May (Mustang) sales were down, calendar year-to-date sales were only down 2.8 percent," Ford spokesman Octavio Navarro told Edmunds Inside Line. "Our focus, in combination with our other cars, is to continue to grow our car market share."

Buyers opt for F-150 V6 over V8

The Ford F-150 is the best-selling model in the country, and that seems to be true no matter what the economic conditions are. Even with gas prices hovering around $4 per gallon, one thing remains true: Americans love their pickup trucks.

Still, the F-150 isn't completely immune to shifts in the market, as recently demonstrated by the May sales totals. Ford reported that "for the first time in decades," the V6 engine option on the F-150 outsold the V8, USA Today reports.

One might assume that drivers were simply trying to save money – but that's not entirely true. The most popular V6 engine was actually the turbocharged EcoBoost, which is $2,000 more expensive than the base V6. However, the EcoBoost has the highest fuel economy of any engine Ford offers on the vehicle, something that buyer's have been going for lately. The EcoBoost also has higher horsepower and torque than the base V6, which justifies the cost to many buyers.

"That's a premium engine that almost always comes with premium content," Ford VP of sales Ken Czubay told the news source.

The V8 isn't going anywhere soon – it still made up 45 percent of all sales. But at least for May, it appears that the V6 was king.

Ford to reintroduce three-cylinder engine to U.S.

Automakers are pulling out all the stops in an effort to raise fuel economy, but Ford may be taking the most drastic step yet – introducing a three-cylinder engine.

Ford isn't the first automaker to offer a three-cylinder engine – they were last seen on Suzuki Swifts and Chevrolet Metros in the 1990s. However, the planned reintroduction of the engine in the U.S., likely set for next year, will come as a shock to many, as most accepted that an automaker wouldn't go lower then four cylinders in a mass production vehicle again.

The three cylinders will allow Ford to achieve a higher MPG rating. In fact, it may allow the automaker to get 50 miles per gallon – unheard of for a gas-powered car.

"Consumers are telling us they want to buy affordable vehicles that get many more miles per gallon," said Derrick Kuzak, global product development chief. "Our new 1-liter EcoBoost engine will give consumers looking for hybrid-like fuel economy a new, more affordable choice."

Ford has been mum with the details, but it's likely that the compact Fiesta will be the recipient of the smaller engine.

Ford shows off “smart car” sensors in San Francisco

Ford recently took to the streets of San Francisco to demonstrate new "smart cars" that can send information to each other.

The new safety improvement works by utilizing GPS and wireless technology to constantly send updates between vehicles about the location of cars. The feature only works in a limited range, but it could prove useful in preventing accidents.

Ford is just one of many automakers working on the project, which includes General Motors, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Audi, Mercedes, Hyundai and more. They say it will be at least five years before the feature is available on mass-produced vehicles. However, the cooperation between automakers is a good sign early on.

"Next year, we're doing a model deployment in a city where there will be thousands of equipped vehicles and trucks and buses all sending out these messages, and then the goal in 2013 is to start a regulation that will require this on all vehicles," Ford technical director Mike Shulman told PC Magazine. "Then, maybe consumer electronics companies would start designing products that could be retrofitted onto existing cars, because everyone sees the potential."

The technology is still years away, so in the meantime drivers might want to consider buying a used car from New Jersey State Auto Auction. Whether it's a used Ford or any other vehicle, there are a wide range of cars for sale at affordable prices.

IIHS names six small cars as “Top Safety Picks”

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety routinely tests batches of vehicles to determine its "Top Safety Picks," an award that's been coveted by the automotive industry in the past. The group recently took a look at 13 small cars and crossovers, and found that six were worthy of the prestigious title.

Of the cars tested, only the Ford Focus, Toyota Prius, Nissan Juke, Lexus CT200h, Hyundai Elantra and Honda Civic were able to perform well enough to receive the award. The IIHS maintains that all vehicles must earn the highest rating of "good" on front, side, rear and rollover tests to qualify.

This tough requirement can lead to disappointment for some brands, as the Honda Insight and CR-Z found out in this round of testing. Both cars earned good ratings on all tests except the rollover, where they were merely "acceptable." Similarly, the Scion xD had three good tests, save for an "acceptable" front impact crash.

Other models, such as the Suzuki SX4 and Dodge Caliber, did not fare as well, with multiple tests deemed merely "acceptable" and even a few "marginal" thrown in.

If you're in the market for a safe and reliable vehicle that won't break the bank, check out New Jersey State Auto Auction. They have many "Top Safety Picks" of past and present available at reasonable prices.
