Consumer Reports Highlights Drivers’ Favorite Brands

Every year, Consumer Reports looks at drivers’ perception of the various car brands, and then ranks them from best to worst. The most recent report looks at data collected over the past year concerning consumers’ opinions on seven categories for each brand – quality, safety, value, performance, technology/innovation, environmentally-friendly/green and design/style. Toyota, Ford and Honda were ranked the highest in terms of customer satisfaction. Toyota and Honda both saw improvements over last year’s scores, while Ford’s high score remained unchanged. Other brands did not fare as well. Scion, Mitsubishi and Ram were at the bottom of the barrel with the worst overall scores.

“This past year brought stability and increased sales to much of the automotive industry. Yet, the brand awareness scores for some like BMW, Buick and Hyundai have declined,” said Jeff Bartlett, deputy auto editor online for Consumer Reports. “The data shows that is has become harder for companies to compete for share of mind. Consumers are not seeing as much differentiation between brands as they have in the past.”

It is important to note that this ranking is not demonstrative of the actual quality and level of safety of cars. Rather, it reflects how drivers feel about the vehicles they own and have driven. The report can prove to be a useful tool for car shoppers, as it may help them decide between two vehicles, if one brand was ranked well below another.

However, a brand that ranks lower on this list does not necessarily produce low-quality vehicles. A car that was not right for some may still be a perfect fit for you. You can find a wide selection of makes and models at NJ State Auto Auction. No matter which brand you prefer, you can drive off the lot with confidence, as every model is CARFAX certified.

Shelby Marks 50th Anniversary with Car that Started It All

This year marks the 50th anniversary for Shelby American, the company behind the sporty performance cars that once stood alone but are now tightly entwined with Ford Mustang. To celebrate the milestone, Shelby had a special showcase set up just outside the entrance to the New York International Auto Show. Nearly a dozen customized Mustang Shelby vehicles were on display in a roped-off section, but one car stood out from the crowd of mostly-new vehicles. The very first Shelby ever built stood on a raised platform on the outer edge, making it the first vehicle visitors saw as they entered the Javits Center in New York City.

The Shelby, built in 1962, belongs to company founder Carroll Shelby and made its first world debut at the very same auto show half a century ago. The vehicle appeared to have been taken care of over the years, but signs of wear and tear were apparent in the torn leather seats and worn shifter. AutoBlog estimates the value of the sporty vehicle to be around $20 million, but Shelby has no plans of selling.

"I heard someone once offered him $25 million for it, but he turned it down," a Ford spokesperson explained at the Auto Show.

The anniversary was also marked by the debut of the newest Shelby 1,000, based on a Mustang GT500. The street-legal version of this supercar offers 950 hp, and the track-only model is even more powerful with 1,100 hp. The latest Shelby is the most powerful sports car ever made by Shelby or Ford, Torque News reports.

However, with a price tag starting around $150,000, this car is not for everyone. Those looking for used cars in NJ, whether they want to find a powerful Mustang or something smaller and more fuel-efficient, can head to New Jersey State Auto Auction. The dealer has a wide selection of makes and models at affordable prices.

Ford Focus Electric Named America’s Most Fuel-Efficient Vehicle

The 2012 Ford Focus Electric was recently named the most fuel-efficient five-passenger vehicle in America. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Focus Electric has a fuel economy of 110 miles per gallon equivalent in the city, edging out its biggest competitor, the Nissan Leaf. The new car can travel 76 miles on a single charge, which is just a bit better than the 73-mile range of the Leaf. It also recharges in half the time of the Japanese model.

The Focus has been offering great fuel economy for years, so an older model can be just right for drivers looking to get behind the wheel of a used car. The 2009 model, for example, gets 35 MPGs on the highway, according to Edmunds.

This is just one of the many fuel-efficient vehicles offered by the American automaker. Ford hopes the upcoming 2013 Ford Fusions could be the most efficient hybrid and gas-powered mid-size sedans. This could make Ford's lineup one of the best in terns of fuel consumption.

"Ford is giving customers the power of choice for leading fuel economy regardless of what type of vehicle or powertrain technology they choose," said Eric Kuehn, chief engineer for the Focus Electric. "The Focus and Fusion are great examples of how we transformed our fleet of cars, utilities and trucks with leading fuel efficiency."

Whether drivers are looking to get behind the wheel of a used Focus, or they want to check out some other fuel-efficient cars, they should head to New Jersey State Auto Auction. The dealer carries a wide variety of affordable, fuel-efficient models to choose from, and all their cars are CARFAX certified.

It’s Electric: Plug-in Ford Fusion Debuted at Detroit Auto Show

The Ford Fusion has been a popular midsize sedan since it first hit the market in 2005, and with the recent announcement of its upcoming models that's not likely to change anytime soon. Ford revealed that the next Fusion will come in a plug-in, hybrid or turbo option, USA Today reports.

The unveiling came at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, which kicked off earlier this week and happened as Ford continues to make a big push toward fuel efficiency, and many analysts are surprised that the company is going to offer a plug-in model because so few major manufacturers have done so.

"We brought our global teams together around a blank slate with the charge to develop a midsize car with ground-breaking design and jaw-dropping fuel economy," Derrick Kuzak, group vice president of global product development, said in the announcement, the publication reports.

Although the new versions are part of the 2013 model, that does not mean that drivers can't get excellent fuel efficiency out of their used Ford Fusion as well. For instance, the 2010 Fusion got a respectable 34 mpg on the highway.

Of course, there are a number of things you can do while out on the road to help improve your gas mileage even more. For instance, driving at or around the speed limit has shown to have a positive impact, as has opting for cruise control on the highway.

Whether you're looking for a Fusion or another similar midsize sedan, New Jersey State Auto is the place to go. Its diverse collection of used cars at affordable prices makes finding the right vehicle easier than ever.

L.A. Auto Show features practical cars

Though often regarded as a showcase for some of the world's most luxurious cars, this year's Los Angeles Auto Show was a little different than in years past. Although there was still a fair amount of impressive vehicles, the larger focus was on consumer-friends sedans and crossover SUVs, the Los Angeles Times reports.

One of the highlights of the show was the debut of the 2013 Ford Escape, which has earned its place among the most popular SUVs on the road. Though its been around for more than a decade, the latest model of the Escape was so eagerly awaited due to the fact that it has a redesigned cabin, which offers more space, as well as a new 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

The Escape's main competitor, the Honda CR-V, also debuted its latest model, the L.A. Times reports. It may not have a new look like the Escape, but it includes several new features such as in-car audio streaming and a new 185-horsepower engine.

Although SUVs made a big splash in the show, practical sedans also garnered their fair share of attention, most notably the 2012 Hyundai Azera. The model enjoys a new, sleeker look and is expected to compete with industry standards such as the Ford Taurus and Volkswagen Passat, according to the newspaper.

Though not everyone can make their way to the L.A. Auto Show, consumers can certainly take a few hints on what the best used cars to buy are. New Jersey Auto Auction offers drivers with a wide variety of makes and models and they're all at affordable prices. Ford unveils redesigned Escape

Ford recently unveiled the 2013 version of its popular Escape, and consumers may be surprised to see a much different look for the SUV. The revamped look includes a curvier frame, and Ford believes the Escape will be among the most fuel-efficient cars of its kind, USA Today reports.

The latest model has a number of other impressive features as well. In addition to a rear tailgate that can be operated remotely by the driver simply waving his or her foot under the bumper, the Escape will also get about five more miles to the gallon than in previous years due to a new engine.

The redesign comes as the Ford Escape is challenging some of the most popular SUVs in the industry. Analysts say that the new look was unveiled in the hopes of competing with the Honda CR-V, which has long been one of the most-driven vehicles of its kind.

"We wanted to create the impression of an athlete, like a runner or a swimmer, in the new body," Ford's European design director Martin Smith said in a statement.

According to Bloomberg, both the CR-V and Escape have been enjoying a resurgence as of late as consumers are beginning to value fuel-efficiency above most other characteristics. In particular, smaller SUVs have accounted for 11 percent of all auto sales in the United States so far this year.

Whether you're looking for a Ford Escape or a smaller fuel-efficient sedan, New Jersey State Auto Auction has what you're looking for. In addition to having a wide variety of makes and models, New Jersey Auto ensures that all of its used cars are Carfax-certified so you know you're getting a reliable vehicle.

For the second year in a row, the best selling car of 2011 so far has been the Ford F-150. Though it has always been popular, the F-150 may have benefited in recent years thanks to Ford's push to make it more fuel-efficient. Coming in at number two behind Ford was the Chevrolet Silverado, which also had the same standing last year.

Though American-made cars took the top two spots, the Toyota Camry landed in third, making it the most popular passenger car. A longstanding favorite among American consumers, the Camry remained in the top five despite sliding numbers and having to contend with the devastating earthquake that rocked Japan and slowed production. With a redesign coming in 2012, it is likely to retain its spot for the time being.
The Ford Escape also made an appearance on the list at number five, signaling the American driver's need to find a more fuel-efficient SUV. The mid-size favorite is also in line for a redesign in 2012, the publication reports. Other highlights on the list were Ford Fusion (number six) and the Chevrolet Cruze at number nine.

New Ford Explorer, Chevy Equinox the top SUVs

With rising gas prices and an greater emphasis placed on fuel economy, smaller and more fuel-efficient SUVs have become increasingly popular. According to CNN Money, there are a number of SUVs that have helped changed the face of the cars and remain a favorite among consumers.

The Ford Explorer is the first one that comes to mind. The redesigned Explorer has seen a large increase in sales this year thanks in large part to the fact that it has shifted from a truck-based look to a sleeker, more economical one. The Ford Escape has been popular as well due to its impressive 28 miles per gallon.

As for another American standard, Chevrolet has a high-selling smaller SUV as well. The Equinox offers consumers a much more manageable size than some of their other models.

Ford, Spotify team up to show ease of streaming music

Driving and music go hand-in-hand and in an effort to provide motorists with easier access to their favorite tunes, Ford and the Swedish music provider Spotify have teamed up to show how easy it is to stream music in the car. TechCrunch reports that although it is not an official partnership, it still is indicative of the way motorists listen to music.

The two companies showed that Ford drivers can use the car's innovative SYNC system to make use of Spotify. The technology makes it so that motorists can use their voice to activate music, make phone calls and in the case of the 2011 Fiesta, activate smartphone apps using the AppLink program.

The pair demonstrated how to use Spotify through the SYNC technology at the recent TechCrunch Hackathon. Although it is currently available in just one model, Ford is hoping that all their cars will have AppLink by 2012, the website reports.

The advent of the SYNC technology is not the only big plan that Ford has in the works. The manufacturer is also leading the charge in eco-friendly cars highlighted by an electric version of the popular Focus.
