Unique Mustang to be auctioned off for charity

A unique Mustang inspired by the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird spy plane will be auctioned off for charity at an aviation event in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the Experimental Aircraft Association AirVenture aviation show asked Ford to design a special vehicle in order to raise money for EAA Young Eagles, a foundation that provides educational flights for children.

The automaker obliged, and designed a one-of-a-kind iteration of its 2011 Mustang model. The unique vehicle includes a supercharger that boosts its V8 engine up over 500 horsepower, special performance wheels, and a lower ride height. In addition, the sleek black paintjob and “fuel streak” racing stripes, calls to mind the classic stealth plane.

“The difficulty is trying to honestly make the car look like the plane has sort of wrapped itself around the car,” Mustang chief engineer Dave Pericak told the news source. “Anybody can just bolt things on and make it gimmicky. You want to really make the car become the aircraft.”

It’s unlikely that many buyers will be able to afford the unique vehicle’s $500,000 price tag. Yet that doesn’t mean drivers have to price themselves out of a pony car. By searching the pre-owned market, consumers can easily find used Ford Mustangs at a fraction of the original price.

New York cabbies prefer used Ford Crown Vics

A new initiative to replace New York City’s 13,400 taxis with a more fuel-efficient and greener option is being met with some resistance by the taxi drivers who navigate the cars through the city’s busy streets every day.

Although the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission has kicked off its “Taxi of Tomorrow” competition in an effort to find cleaner vehicles, many drivers say they will be sad to see their used Ford Crown Victorias go. The commission hopes to replace the varied models among the NY used cars that cabbies drive with one clean, standard model by 2014, according to USA Today.

Yet Ford has decided to discontinue the Crown Vic, so taxi companies will need to find a new option. The Taxi of Tomorrow competition was launched in order to find a satisfactory alternative. Still, many drivers have nostalgia for the vehicles they have driven for years.

Jana Stroe says she has been driving used Ford Crown Vics for 20 years. “The car is good the way it is,” she told the news source. “We don’t want the hybrid. Hybrids have so many problems. We take a lot of customers from the small cars.”

Many drivers echoed her views, saying that when given the choice between the two, many customers will gravitate toward a roomier vehicle like the Crown Vic over a more compact car. Some drivers even report earning extra money behind the wheel of a Crown Vic.

Whatever the city ends up deciding upon as its new model, tourists can rest assured: the cars will still be painted that famous shade of yellow.

Ford undertakes social media blitz to launch Explorer

Ford‘s redesign of its popular Explorer SUV model bucks the usual trend in a number of ways. For starters, the automaker has redesigned the vehicle to provide an emphasis on fuel economy and practicality rather than off-roading and towing capabilities. But the other reason the new Explorer is turning heads is its unorthodox marketing campaign.

Rather than unveil the new car at an auto show, Ford has instead decided to harness the power of the internet in order to coordinate a massive campaign across social media. The automaker has hosted live chats and videos across its YouTube, Facebook and Twitter pages for a number of days to drum up excitement for the new vehicle, according to the Detroit Free Press.

It all culminated with live events in nine cities, where the new model was unveiled in a variety of ways. In Oshkosh, Wisconsin, it was flown in by helicopter. In Chicago, it burst through a faux-wood wall.

“It was a very unorthodox and unusual launch,” Rebecca Lindland, automotive analyst for IHS Automotive, told the news source. “We are going to see this more and more because of the impact of social media.”

The Explorer is a classic model, and was the best-selling midsize SUV in America between 1995-2004, according to the news source. That figure means that there will be plenty of used Ford Explorers in a variety of options available on the used car market, should car buyers have nostalgia for the previous designs.

Ford posts big second quarter earnings

It’s a good day for Ford, as the company has posted second-quarter profits of $2.6 billion, surpassing Wall Street analysts’ expectations and increasing 13 percent year on year. Ford’s redesigned lineup of cars for sale was reportedly a factor in the large earnings.

The company attributed the rise in profits to vehicle sales, especially of popular models like the Fusion, F-150, Taurus and Fiesta. The company generated revenue of $31.3 billion in global sales during the second quarter.

Ford CEO Alan Mulally, the architect behind the company’s turnaround, said that 2010 has been a “terrific year,” but said he believes 2011 will be even better. When the company’s first and second quarter results are put together, it shows it was the best first half for Ford in more than a decade.

Ford’s new fleet includes some models that are priced a touch higher than their previous incarnations. In addition, Ford customers opted for features, like the voice-activation system Sync, that drove up the cost of the cars. Edmunds reported that customers spent $30,309 on average on Ford vehicles in June.

Car buyers who may not want to pay that much may want to search for some late-model used Fords on the pre-owned market. With models like the Explorer SUV and Focus compact slated to get a redesign later this year, there may be an influx of the 2010 models.

Ford and Chrysler are the latest to recall

In the wake of the massive Toyota recalls, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is cracking down on auto companies’ safety defects more than ever. The two latest brands forced to recall vehicles are Ford and Chrysler.

According to Reuters, Ford will recall 33,700 of its Transit Connect commercial vans, due to an interior liner flaw that may not properly protect a driver in case of a crash. The vans are popular among small businesses and similar ventures.

“In the event of a vehicle crash, an occupant could be at increased risk of injury,” the NHTSA summarized in a letter to Ford.

Meanwhile, Chrysler will recall 22,000 of its 2010 model Dodge Nitro, Ram 1500, and Jeep Liberty and Wrangler trucks and SUVs, due to a tube problem that may leak brake fluid.

Those in the market for a vehicle may want to avoid new cars until recalls and defects are sorted out. Small businesses, for example, may opt to buy a used Ford Transit with no history of defects in order to ensure their business runs smoothly and uninterrupted by safety recalls.

Ford ups sales in China

China is an emerging market for automakers, with each trying to establish their market share in the rapidly-developing nation. American company Ford got some good news, as their sales in the first half of the year in China broke their previous record.

According to the Associated Press, Ford sold 301,524 vehicles in China during the first six months, up 53 percent from the same time in 2009. In China, Ford sells its companies through two sources: the Changan Ford Mazda Automobile company, a joint venture with Mazda, and Jiangling Motors, a Chinese automaker that provides Ford with an additional dealer network for the Ford Transit van.

Jiangling sold 88,363 Fords, while Changan Ford Mazda sold 205,563. Both were records for the respective companies, as well as a record for Ford overall.

Ford still lags behind GM in China, although it is slowly gaining market share. GM sold 1.2 million cars in China during the same period, actually outpacing its American sales for the first time.

Automakers are still trying to figure out Chinese preferences in automobiles. It appears that compact and performance-oriented vehicles are popular, and Ford’s new Fiesta subcompact led the way. Ford will also debut a compact Focus in the Chinese market later this year.

Edmunds picks used car “best bets”

Auto website Edmunds recently listed its 2010 picks for “best bets” on the used car market. The awards are based on three issues: reliability, safety and availability. Those interested in purchasing a used car may want to consider picking up some of these models.

The picks were restricted to 2003-2008. Toyota was the most-picked brand, with its Camry, Tacoma and Prius models taking home their respective categories. Honda also put in a good showing, earning praise for its CR-V and Odyssey. Hyundai also had two cars, with the Azera and Elantra winning the large and compact sedan categories.

The rest of the field was a bit of a grab bag, but notable winners include the Ford F-150 for a large truck, BMW 3 Series for a coupe, and Infiniti G35 for a luxury vehicles.

Sometimes it pays for consumers to wait until models have been on the road for a few years to see which will remain reliable and live up to their billing. Then, drivers can be sure to pick up the best-designed models at a discount on the used car market.

Redesigned Fiesta impresses

Subcompacts, while popular overseas, have never quite caught on in the U.S., but increased concerns about fuel economy may soon change that. If that turns out to be the case, Ford could be the big winner, as its new 2011 Fiesta is quickly becoming the leader of the class.

The redesigned Fiesta has racked up a number of good reviews and accolades. Car blog Jalopnik called it “the best small car you can buy in this country.” The Detroit Free Press gave it four stars, praising its affordability, handling and class-leading fuel economy.

It was the fuel efficiency that led the car to win Cars.com’s mileage challenge. The website put the Fiesta up against some of the other cars in its class, such as the Nissan Cube, Honda Fit, and Scion xD. The Fiesta took the cake in terms of fuel economy, and some package options can give the car 40 miles per gallon on the highway.

Other features include Ford’s Sync, which allows for iPod integration, along with a dual-clutch six-speed transmission that improves the handling even further.

Those interested in subcompacts will be happy to learn that the cars are among the cheapest available. Buying a used Ford Fiesta will give consumers even greater value.

Ford continues turnaround, paying off debt

Ford has announced that it will pay off nearly $4 billion in debt to the United Auto Workers retirement trust fund, defying investors’ expectations for the automaker.

Although the company has been profitable for several quarters now, investors were hesitant about the company’s turnaround because of its outstanding debt, the largest of which was owed to UAW. However, increased sales have allowed the automaker to pay the deficit off ahead of schedule, using cash rather than stock options.

“We expect to continue to improve our balance sheet as we deliver on our plan. Importantly, our business results make it possible to take these actions while still accelerating the investments we are making in our business to serve our customers with the very best cars and trucks," CEO Alan Mullaly said in a statement.

The company has pulled off a remarkable turnaround as of late, shaking off the effects of the economic downturn. Its new models, especially the Mustang and Fiesta, have won considerable critical acclaim, and the company’s finances seem primed for future growth.

That being said, consumers are unlikely to find the recession-buster deals at the new car lot they did in the past. Drivers who see themselves in a Ford might want to take a look at the used car market in order to find a good deal.

Ford dominates “most wanted” awards

As the only company not to accept a government bailout, Ford has been watched closely by auto industry experts. If the results of Edmund’s Inside Line “Most Wanted” awards are any indication, the automaker is getting something right.

The website surveyed readers in a poll of 15 categories of cars in different classes and price points. Ford took home top marks in eight of the categories, and it was only entered in ten.

Three different Mustang models accounted for three of those categories, as the 2010 model has been celebrated for its efficient 30 miles per gallon while still packing 305 horsepower. Other Ford models included the F-150, Flex and Fusion.

Audi took home three awards, mainly in luxury and performance categories. The most wanted concept car went to the Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid. BMW had one entry on the list, as did Jeep with its Wrangler SUV.

Those who have Fords on their own personal “most wanted” list can save off the popular cars by buying used Fords on the pre-owned market.
