Muscle cars see growth in June

Hearkening back to the glory days of muscle cars, Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge are all offering powerful classic rides that not only appeal to a new generation of drivers but will certainly grab at baby boomers who lusted after the original versions of these iconic vehicles.

According to The Wall Street Journal, sales of all of the cars – the Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro, and Dodge Challenger – are on the way up. They are in fact outpacing the June growth of more family-friendly passenger cars that the big three automakers are most well-known for.

The trio, all of which bare a striking resemblance to their forebears, are not only nice to look at but pack a serious punch. The news source reports that the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 boasts 444 horsepower, while the 2012 Camaro ZLA offers 550 horsepower.

Executives say that most of the cars are being purchased either by 20 to 30-year-olds or 45 to 55-year-olds.

"We definitely see more than a baby boomer audience," Chevy marketing executive John Fitzpatrick told the Journal.

NYPD purchases Chevy Volts

In its relatively short life, the revolutionary Chevrolet Volt has made waves in the auto industry, and now it's ready to head into law enforcement as well. USA Today reports that the New York Police Department recently bought 50 Volts, making it the first police force in the country to use them.

The addition of Volts seems like a logical move for the NYPD, as the force has already employed the use of electric golf carts and scooters. Additionally, some officers have also been driving the hybrid Toyota Prius. Although the Volts will only be used for traffic duty, Mayor Michael Bloomberg says it's an important part of making the Big Apple more green.

"This is the latest and largest-ever addition of electric vehicles to the city's fleet, which is already the largest municipal clean-air vehicle fleet in the nation," Bloomberg said in a press release. "We will continue to lead by example."

Chevy Camaro makes third appearance in ‘Transformers’ franchise

When "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" hit theaters on June 28, moviegoers were not going just to catch a glimpse of the actors. Like the previous two films in the series, the Chevrolet Camaro was featured prominently, much to the delight of the popular manufacturer.

"Its role in the films helped make the Camaro the best-selling sports car in America, and one of the best-known cars of any kind around the world," Rick Scheidt, Chevrolet's vice president of marketing, told USA Today.

A yellow and black Camaro has portrayed the character of Bumblebee in each of the movies, and according to the news source, the company recently unveiled a special edition coupe in recognition of the film. In addition to looking like the car from the movie, the update model includes a number of impressive features.

In addition to sitting on 20-inch wheels, the car is outfitted with a black leather interior that is highlighted by yellow stitching everywhere from the center console to the armrests to the seats. Transformers logos also make an appearance throughout the vehicle as well.

Camaro on top in fight with Mustang

The rivalry between the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang is always intense, and these two vehicles have traded sales dominance back and forth countless times throughout their 30-plus year history.

Recently, the relationship between these two famous models has shifted yet again, as the Camaro has been trouncing the Mustang in sales. This is a complete reversal from just a year ago, when it was the Mustang on top.

Sales totals for May show 9,451 units sold for Chevrolet, with Ford managing to move just 6,607 Mustangs. That's a big drop-off for Ford, which sold 10,225 Mustangs during the same month in 2010 – when Chevy was only able to sell 8,931 Camaros.

Still, Ford is quick to point out that the Mustang is not knocked out yet, and that high gas prices made May an unattractive month to buy a muscle car.

"Although May (Mustang) sales were down, calendar year-to-date sales were only down 2.8 percent," Ford spokesman Octavio Navarro told Edmunds Inside Line. "Our focus, in combination with our other cars, is to continue to grow our car market share."

Volt earns highest safety rating from NHTSA

When the Chevrolet Volt turns up in the news, it's usually in regards to its electric powertrain, which has been a top selling point for General Motors thus far. However, the most recent news to come out of the Volt camp is the fact that the car has earned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) highest possible safety rating of five stars.

The NHTSA recently revised its testing to make achieving five stars significantly harder for automakers to achieve, as it seemed like nearly ever car tested in years prior was able to earn five stars. Models must pass a front, side and rollover test to earn the honor.

The Volt did very well on the rollover and side-impact test, scoring five stars on both. There was a minor hiccup on the front-impact test, where the car was only rated four stars. There was actually a gender discrepancy here – the car earned five stars with a male test dummy, but the female model suffered more damage and caused the score to be lowered to a four.

Still, the two five-star scores along with the four were enough to earn the car the highest possible rating overall, which is something Chevrolet will likely be playing up in future advertisements for the vehicle.

American automakers dominate top 10 model list

Domestic automakers are celebrating after May sales totals came in, as many of the top-selling Japanese cars fell out of the top 10.

Typically, the list of best-selling models is dominated by the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado pickup trucks, followed closely by the seemingly unbeatable quartet of the Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, Honda Accord and Toyota Corolla.

Yet due to the Japanese earthquake and shifting market conditions, these four models all took a hit in May sales, falling out of the top 10. That allowed many domestic vehicles to jump up the list.

Chief among these was the redesigned Chevrolet Malibu, which became the best-selling car in the country, and third-best model overall (still falling behind the two trucks, technically not classified as "cars."). Nissan, which hasn't felt the sting of the earthquake as much as its rivals, was in fourth with its Altima.

The rest of the list was mostly dominated by American cars, something that hasn't really been seen in quite some time. The Ford Fusion, Focus, Escape and new Chevrolet Cruze all made their way onto the list, along with the Hyundai Sonata and Elantra.

Drivers interested in any of these vehicles may want to consider New Jersey State Auto Auction before they head to the new car dealership. Often, lightly-used versions of these popular models can be found at a heavy discount.

Electric vehicle tax credit to become instant rebate?

Electric vehicles like the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf are brand new, and recent technology naturally costs more than the materials everyone's been using for years. That means that the two vehicles are quite pricey given their size, which is why the government decided to step in and help out with a $7,500 federal tax rebate for all drivers who purchased an EV.

A $7,500 discount on a vehicle sound pretty good no matter what the starting price is, but drivers may be a bit dismayed to know that this is something they can only claim come tax time. Given that the federal filing deadline for the year has already passed, that means a full year before that money is in a driver's pocket.

Now, The Associated Press reports that the Obama administration is hoping to make that tax rebate instant for drivers. The plan has not yet come to fruition, but the government believes that this is a better way of encouraging drivers to buy EVs than promising the money a year down the road.

"We'd like for people to get a $7,500 rebate on the day they buy the Leaf," LaHood said during a tour of a Nissan facility. The Transportation Secretary hoped that an instant rebate would motivate drivers in the same way that the immediate cash of the successful "Cash for Clunkers" program drove people to dealers.

Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt butt heads in newest ad

Drivers might assume that since the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt are the first two electric vehicles to make it to market, that the two models would stick together – after all, interest in electric models as a concept is good for the future of both brands. However, Nissan has made it clear that it's not playing nice in its latest advertisement, which attempts to knock the Volt down a peg.

The conceptual ad, entitled "Gas-Powered Everything," is set to air during the NBA Finals on June 12th. The minute-long commercial takes place in an alternate reality where apparently electricity doesn't exist – everything from coffee makers to iPods are run on gas, with accompanying plumes of smoke.

These comical images continue until about 75 percent of the way through the ad, when a pathetic-looking driver is seen filling up his Chevrolet Volt at a gas station. A voice then asks "what if everything ran on gas?" as the man watches another driver pass by in his Nissan Leaf. "Then again, what if everything didn't?"

The commercial clearly goes after the Volt where it hurts – taking the electric vehicle to task for using a gas generator to assist the motor. The Leaf never has to visit a gas station, although it is that generator that gives the Volt a greater range than the Leaf.

Electric vehicles are still pretty expensive, so drivers might want to wait until they hit the used car market before committing to one. In the meantime, New Jersey State Auto Auction offers a wide range of high-MPG vehicles, including hybrids.

Survey: Americans holding off on Volt, Leaf

There's been a lot of hype surrounding electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf, but a recent survey reveals that the cars have a long way to go before they're fully accepted by the American public.

The poll, organized by USA Today and Gallup, found that 57 percent of Americans will not by an electric vehicle, no matter how high fuel prices rise. The skyrocketing cost of gas has caused many to consider the vehicles, but the poll makes clear that there's a limit on just how many consumers will be swayed by the electric argument.

Edmunds CEO Jeremy Anwyl said that the models "find acceptance among a core group of passionistas, but too many questions remain for mainstream consumers." Concerns for many drivers include arrange, charge time, and the cost of energy the drivers will incur through charging the vehicles. In addition, the models are quite pricey to start out with, even after a $7,500 federal tax credit is factored into the equation.

Drivers who want to hold off on purchasing electric vehicles may want to consider used cars instead. New Jersey Auto Auction offers a wide range of cars for sale, including some of the more fuel-efficient models on the market today.

Chevy to ramp up Volt production

Chevrolet has announced plans to ramp up production on its electric-hybrid Volt after a factory overhaul.

In order for the factory, located in Detroit-Hamtramck, to prepare for the changes, GM will close the factory at the beginning of June for at least four weeks. However, the lost production time will be made up immediately in increased efficiency. When all is said and done, the plant will actually produce 1,000 more Volts this year than the originally planned total of 15,000.

While the changes will have an effect on production this year, GM is really looking toward the future. Production for Volts has been increased for 2012 from 45,000 to 60,000. In addition, the factory will also be responsible for manufacturing the 2013 Malibu, beginning next year.

The move is largely seen as a reaction to the growing demand for fuel-efficient vehicles. The Volt has been available for some time, but has still only been released in limited markets. The increase in production is a sign that the car is catching on and GM is putting its full support behind the electric vehicle.

Recent news about the Volt from Kelley Blue Book suggests that the $41,000 will retail for about $17,000 if bought used in three years, so drivers may want to wait until they hit the used car market before making a move.
