Despite supply chain problems resulting from the impact of COVID-19, 2022 turned out to be a pretty good year for automakers. Used car sales were strong, particularly among several top vehicles. Here at New Jersey State Auto Used Cars, our pre-owned vehicle experts have compiled a list of some of the bestselling SUVs, trucks, and cars for 2022. You can find many of these vehicles from the 2021 model year and earlier in our used car showroom.
Toyota Corolla
If you need a more compact option than the Accord, check out the Corolla. It is sold as a sedan or hatchback, which offers slightly more cargo space. Both body styles can seat up to five people, with the front row perfect for adult passengers and the rear row ideal for kids.
The Corolla is offered with two power trains. The base 1.8-liter unit manages 139 horsepower and is extremely fuel-efficient for city driving. The more powerful engine is a 2.0-liter unit that you’ll find in all Corolla hatchbacks and upgraded sedans.
The compact Corolla saw a 5% rise in its sales for 2021 compared to a year earlier. Across the country, 248,993 Corollas were purchased during 2021.
Toyota Tacoma
On the other end of the spectrum, Toyota’s compact pickup truck also had a good year. With 252,520 vehicles sold during 2021, the Tacoma achieved a 5.7% increase compared to 2020.
The Tacoma can seat four or five people, depending on the cab style you choose. There are also two bed lengths on offer: one measuring 6 feet 1 inch and a shorter alternative measuring 5 feet.
Under the hood, the Tacoma is either powered by a four-cylinder unit or a V-6. The V-6 puts out 278 horsepower and is the best option if you want to take advantage of the Tacoma’s 6,000-pound towing capacity.
Mazda CX-5
Mazda’s compact SUV performed well during 2021, with total sales reaching 168,383. This marked a 15% increase compared to the previous year.
Mazda’s bestselling crossover of 2021 provides you with two rows of seating for up to five passengers. The rear row is suitable for three kids or two adults. Behind the second row, you get around 31 cubic feet of cargo-carrying capacity.
Under the hood, standard CX-5s are equipped with a four-cylinder engine that pumps out 187 horsepower. The power train is completed by a six-speed automatic transmission. Upgraded CX5s feature a more powerful turbocharged engine, which can put out up to 250 horsepower with premium fuel.
Honda Accord
The ever-popular Honda Accord had another strong year, with 202,676 vehicles purchased. This was a 1.6% increase over 2020 sales.
The Accord has been one of the most consistently popular mid-sized cars for several years. It features ample space in both rows for adult passengers and a roomy trunk that’s ideal for a large load of groceries.
Both engine options in the Accord offer great acceleration for a mid-sized sedan. The base unit is a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine that puts out up to 192 horsepower. Some Accords are equipped with the more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged unit that cranks out 252 horsepower.
Jeep Grand Cherokee
Buyers could hardly wait to get their hands on Jeep’s mid-sized SUV in 2021, with sales up by 26% compared to 2020. A total of 264,444 Grand Cherokees were sold throughout the year.
The main attraction for many Grand Cherokee buyers is this crossover’s impressive off-roading abilities. In its Trailhawk trim, the Grand Cherokee boasts all-terrain tires, skid plates, and a two-speed transfer case. Inside, this Jeep can seat up to five and carry 36 cubic feet of cargo at the rear.
The Grand Cherokee has a versatile engine lineup to suit almost every need. The base setup pairs a 295-horsepower V-6 with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which is perfect for driving on the highway or on city roads. The optional 5.7-liter V-8 is a great choice if you plan on hauling a trailer or tackling a rough trail. For rapid acceleration, you can choose between the 6.4-liter V-8 or a supercharged version of the same engine that pumps out an eye-watering 707 horsepower.
Chevrolet Silverado
The incredibly versatile Chevy Silverado was purchased 529,765 times during 2021.
Chevy’s full-sized pickup can tow 13,300 pounds and haul over 2,200 pounds in its cargo bed, which makes it an ideal choice for those needing a work truck. It’s also well-suited to families if you buy a Silverado with a Double or Crew cab, either of which can seat up to six people.
The Silverado has a great engine lineup, too, ranging from a turbocharged four-cylinder option to a V-8 powerhouse.
RAM 1500
RAM sold 569,388 trucks during 2021, making them the second-highest purchased vehicle in the US last year.
The RAM 1500 is the choice from RAM’s truck lineup if you want a full-sized pickup. You can choose between a long bed measuring 6 feet 4 inches and a short one measuring 5 feet 7 inches. If you plan on pushing the limit of the RAM 1500’s 12,750-pound towing capacity, you’ll probably want to choose a RAM with one of the optional V-8 engines.
Ford F-150
Ford’s F-series has been top-of-the-pack for truck sales for as long as most people can remember, and that didn’t change in 2021. With 726,0004 vehicles sold, Ford’s F-series truck was the most widely purchased vehicle of 2021.
The Ford F-150 is the bestseller in the F-series lineup. It features a remarkable six engine choices, which allows you to equip this truck for daily driving, off-roading, or heavy hauling. The F-150 leaves all other trucks in the dust when it comes to its towing capacity of 14,000 pounds.
Like most full-sized pickups, you can choose between a functional cab for work truck purposes that can seat up to three people or a more expansive cab with room for six.
