Toyota Prius Named The Best Value By Consumer Reports

The value of a vehicle can be difficult to judge. Prospective buyers have to balance the initial price tag with the cost of fuel, insurance, loan payments and potential auto repair or maintenance expenses. That's all in addition to elements like personal style, technology and performance, and combining all of these qualities into one vehicle can be extremely difficult.

To help drivers judge value, Consumer Reports releases an annual report detailing the vehicles that offer the best value. For the second year in a row, the Toyota Prius topped the list, thanks in large part to its impressive fuel economy. It also offers a low rate of depreciation, ensuring that motorists who are trying to find used cars like this hybrid are getting plenty bang for their buck.

"The Prius' 44 mpg overall is the best fuel economy of any non-plug-in car that Consumer Reports has tested," said Rik Paul, Consumer Reports' automotive editor. "Though it's not particularly cheap to buy, the Prius' depreciation is so low that it costs less to own over the first five years than its initial MSRP. We call that a bargain."

Also ranking highly was the Honda Fit. This vehicle generally offers a low initial price, but its dependability, fuel efficiency and safety features make it a worthy investment. The brands that achieved the best results include Subaru and Mazda, both of which had a number of high-ranking automobiles land among the top choices.

When you're searching for a car with plenty of value, you'll want to look through the selection at New Jersey State Auto Auction. The lot is home to hundreds of CARFAX-certified cars, trucks and vans, including some that offer tremendous value for drivers.

Distracted Driving Is More Common In Adults Than Teens

A recent study from AAA found that two out of every three drivers have used a cellphone within the past month. However, the regular usage of a mobile device behind the wheel varied greatly depending on the age of the driver.

Only about 20 percent of motorists ages 16 to 18 reported being on their phone "fairly often," compared to more than 43 percent of drivers ages 25 to 39. When asked if they had used a phone at least once, about 58 percent of teens said they had. That was significantly lower than drivers ages 25 to 39, of which about 82 percent reported using a device.

Most of these slightly older drivers likely felt more comfortable controlling a car, and believed that texting or making a phone call wasn't as dangerous as a result. Unfortunately, that confidence can sometimes be misplaced, as those motorists who get distracted by technology are four times more likely to be involved in a crash, AAA reported.

"It's noteworthy that the young novice drivers are using their phones while driving less than older drivers since, given their inexperience, they are especially susceptible to distracted driving crashes," said Peter Kissinger, president of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. "At the same time, it is discouraging that cell phone usage picks up when drivers gain more experience, as using a phone can lead to dangerous distractions behind the wheel."

When your teen is ready to start driving, you're going to want to make sure they have a car that is safe and functional. The perfect place to search is at New Jersey State Auto Auction. The lot is home to hundreds of CARFAX-certified cars, trucks and vans, many of which can serve as the ideal vehicle for those young motorists just beginning to drive.

More Than 85 Million People Driving This Holiday Season

It's no secret that the holidays are a busy time of year, especially for people who plan on traveling. A record number of Americans are expected to get behind the wheel to reach their destinations this year, and with so many people on the highways, all motorists should be aware of what to expect to ensure their safety.

AAA estimates that approximately 85.8 million people will travel more than 50 miles by car this holiday season. That marks an increase of almost 1 percent over last year, and it is the fifth consecutive year the number of road trippers has grown. This constitutes the vast majority of travelers as well, making up about 91 percent of all people trekking more than 50 miles during the end of the year.

Many travelers are eager to drive because of the low price of gas. The average cost of a gallon of gas has been dropping steadily throughout the year, and even though there has been a slight uptick in recent weeks, it is still considerably lower than a year ago – and much cheaper than airfare.

Of all of the motorists getting behind the wheel, AAA predicts it will be called to help about 3.76 million stranded drivers. Problems like flat tires, dead batteries and lockouts are likely to be the most common issues facing motorists, but more significant accidents will occur as well. Although it may be impossible to avoid some issues, drivers should still take preventative measures to keep their automobile functioning at a high level.

Before you head out on a road trip this holiday season, make sure you get your car looked at to ensure its safety and capability. The Total Car Care Center at NJ Auto Auction can address any issues you may have.

Mazda Models Offer Top Fuel Economy

Many qualities have to be considered as drivers shop around for a used car. Motorists almost always rank fuel economy highly on their wish-lists, and finding brands with impressive track records in this area becomes incredibly important.

According to a report from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Mazda topped all other brands with regard to average fuel efficiency of its vehicles. The brand boasts an average fuel economy of 27.1 mpg, which was about half a mile ahead of second-place Honda. Although the actual efficiency will vary from car to car, knowing that the brand has a strong reputation for excellent mileage, saving drivers money consistently throughout its life.

Other manufacturers with high ratings include Volkswagen, Toyota and Subaru. All of those automakers have an average fuel economy of more than 25 mpg, providing drivers with plenty of options. Many of these automobiles have been improving for the past several years, which means that even models that are several years old offer great value for drivers.

"While other manufacturers have turned their attention to hybrids and electric cars, we chose to focus on perfecting the base technology used in more than 90 percent of the cars and SUVs sold today: the internal combustion engine," said Jim O'Sullivan, CEO of Mazda North American Operations. "… Mazda has been able to achieve class-leading fuel economy in nearly every segment it competes in, and bring that technology – at an affordable price – to every customer."

More Drivers Turning To All-Wheel Drive Vehicles

When drivers are shopping around for a used car, they are typically looking for an automobile that has low mileage, impressive fuel economy, great safety features and other top-notch amenities. Additionally, it seems that many motorists are searching for vehicles with attractive capabilities, including all-wheel drive. In fact, that characteristic is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after qualities in automobiles.

According to The Detroit News, nearly one-third of all vehicles sold now have all- or four-wheel drive, which is about 5 percent more than it was five years ago. This growth is widely attributed to the rising popularity of crossovers, larger SUVs and pickup trucks. As more drivers turn to these capable options, the number of all-wheel drive vehicles on the road increases.

All automakers are getting in on the action when it comes to all-wheel drive. Luxury vehicles like Jaguar and Audi are introducing options with this capability, while brands like Subaru, Ford and others are emphasizing this skill on all of their models. Used cars also boast this benefit, as the number of vehicles with all-wheel drive has been increasing for several years.

For the most part, drivers are drawn to all-wheel drive vehicles because they can offer excellent control in all types of weather conditions. They are also great for recreational driving.

"It brings this complete bundle of safety, driving performance and capability," Jeremy Acevedo of Edmunds.com told the news source. "It's a really big add for consumers."

Auto Loan Interest Rates Hit Record Lows

Used cars can be costly, but thanks for multiple financing options, drivers have some flexibility when crafting their budget. Luckily for many prospective buyers, the auto loans landscape has become much more hospitable than in the past.

According to data from Experian Automotive, interest rates for auto loans have hit an all-time low. The current average rate now sits at 4.27 percent, which is the lowest mark since the organization began tracking it in 2008. That rate, combined with a longer loan period – an average of 65 months – allows many drivers to take advantage of lower monthly payments.

"With loan rates at historic lows, car shoppers were able to take advantage and get a little more vehicle for their monthly payment," said Melinda Zabritski, senior director of automotive credit for Experian Automotive. "It's a win for everyone, as shoppers perceive they are getting better deals, and manufacturers and dealers are boosting sales."

The data found that average monthly payments for used cars stayed relatively flat at $350. That is despite a small jump in the total amount of financing needed for pre-owned vehicles, which rose from $17,577 in the third quarter of 2012 to $17,900 this year. Also holding steady was the average credit score of individuals who invested in a used car, which remained at 668.

Shoppers Show Their Affinity For The Ford Mustang

Few cars can remain relevant after decades on the road. However, not all vehicles are the Ford Mustang, which has consistently ranked as one of the most sought-after automobiles on the market. In fact, Cars.com, which provides information on used cars, recently released the results of its annual Shoppers' Choice Awards, and the timeless muscle care was its 2013 winner.

Each year, the accolade is given to a vehicle that prospective buyers rate as one of the top options. Qualities like dependability, appearance, fuel efficiency, maintenance and longevity are all considered, as the award is given to a model that delivers throughout the years. To win, a vehicle must receive great reviews and get intense interest from car shoppers.

"The Ford Mustang remains a favorite among shoppers," said Patrick Olsen, editor-in-chief of Cars.com. "In its 50th year of production, the Mustang continues to be a sports car icon, and perhaps Ford's most recognizable car ever. It is an American classic beloved by so many Americans, and the devotion to that car showed in the voting results."

Olsen also noted that this is not the first time the Ford Mustang has appeared on the list. The sports car won the award in 2010 and has found itself among the finalists several times, showing that shoppers have consistently ranked the model as one of the top vehicles on the market, regardless of year. For 2013, the vehicle beat out models like the Chevrolet Camaro, Honda Accord, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 for the top prize.

Ford's Mustang is just one of many sports cars or similar appealing vehicles that drivers may want to consider when shopping for a used car. Luckily, New Jersey State Auto Auction has plenty of options that can satisfy any motorist. With hundreds of CARFAX-certified models, including from cars, trucks and vans,

Watch Out For Odometer Fraud In Used Cars

There are a lot of qualities drivers need to keep in mind when shopping around for a used car. One of the most important is its mileage which can have a major impact on the maintenance, cost, longevity and your personal safety.

A recent CARFAX report examined the prevalence of odometer fraud among used cars. The data collected pointed to the fact that more than 190,000 vehicles have their odometers rolled back each year in an effort to appear as though they have covered fewer miles. That one action can have a major impact on drivers, even totaling more than $760 million in lost value and extra repair fees each year.

"Odometer fraud is a calamity for car buyers," said Larry Gamache, CARFAX communications director. "There are serious problems that can arise from a rollback. Older, deteriorating parts lead to unexpected repairs while unperformed maintenance for the true mileage may compromise the safety and performance of these cars. Not to mention, each victim loses thousands of dollars because they pay much more than these cars are really worth."

Drivers in states such as California, Nevada, New Mexico, New York and Texas need to be on high alert, as those were the regions with the most risk for odometer rollbacks. On average, cars had about 50,000 miles taken off, and the vehicles were likely to be about 14 or 15 years old.

At New Jersey State Auto Auction, future buyers can browse through hundreds of CARFAX-certified cars, trucks and vans as they search for their next ride. Those options have a well-documented history, ensuring that you are looking at vehicles from a dealer you can trust.

Drivers Use Word-Of-Mouth Recommendations To Suggest Auto Brands

When drivers are shopping around for a used car, they typically look at qualities like fuel efficiency, safety features and maintenance costs. Another overlooked aspect of the browsing process is recommendations from others. That is why the Boston Consulting Group put together the Brand Advocacy Index, which looks at the levels of advocacy and user recommendation among different products.

"Consumers are positively recommending the most recommended brands to their friends, family and coworkers – often spontaneously and even when they are not customers of the brand," said Steve Knox, the co-author of the study. "Their strong financial results show the power of advocacy to drive top-line growth."

Within the auto industry, Honda, Hyundai and Kia ranked among the top brands. While the average for the auto industry was about 50 percent, those three Asia-based automakers had the highest scores for the U.S. at 63 percent in the brand ratings. Owners of those three vehicles generally liked their investment and passed on word-of-mouth recommendations to others, which frequently encouraged fellow motorists to look into the brands and survey their options.

"Our top position in word-of-mouth recommendation rankings of auto brands in the U.S. is attributable to positive customer experiences and our brand image," said Michael Sprague, executive vice president at Kia Motors America, as quoted by Business Korea.

When someone recommends a specific brand or type of car, it may pique your interest. That is where NJ State Auto Auction can come into play. The lot is home to hundreds of CARFAX-certified vehicles from a variety of top brands, ensuring you'll be able to find a car, truck or van that meet your requirements.

New Report Focuses On Vehicle Thefts During Holidays

Drivers have to be aware of many issues when they're on the road, but the problems don't end when their car is parked. Vehicle thefts are a very real problem, and motorists should be taking steps to prevent this problem from arising. This even extends to holidays. A recently released study from the National Crime Information Center and the National Insurance Crime Bureau looked at trends in stolen vehicle reports across 11 major U.S. holidays and celebrations in 2012.

According to the data, the worst day for thefts was New Year's Day. More than 2,220 cars were reported stolen Jan. 1, which edged out days like Labor Day, New Year's Eve and Memorial Day. However, this still was not as bad as other days throughout the year. There were 64 other dates that had more vehicles stolen, with the highest numbers recorded June 1, July 23 and Aug. 1.

The best holiday with regard to vehicle thefts was Christmas, when only 1,432 cars were reported stolen. That was just ahead of Valentine's Day and Thanksgiving, which were the next-lowest days on the list. The Dec. 25 holiday boasted the lowest car theft total of any day in 2012, holiday or otherwise.

In total, the number of vehicles stolen on the 11 holidays in 2012 reached 21,325. That is a 2.5 percent increase over 2011, when 20,800 automobiles were reported stolen on the same days.

Whether you find yourself the victim of a car theft or simply want to take preventative measures to avoid the situation, you should consider heading to NJ State Auto Auction. The lot boasts hundreds of CARFAX-certified cars, trucks and vans, many of which offer advanced technology and great features that could enhance your driving experience.
